Mens Barber needed in Canberra

Hey All–

Have just moved to Canberra and have had two of the worst haircuts (I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt) in my life at one of those el-cheap-o places in the shopping mall.

What I would really like is an experienced barber…used to get a great haircut for 12 dollars in Newtown that even included a straight-razor shave. Is there anything like that here?

Cheers!

Hair by Charles used to be really good. Don’t know if they’re still up to standard.

Hi Guys, I am positive the comments posted on here MUST be friends or owners of these guys because i just visited most of them and Id rather get my girlfriend to cut my hair!. Im opening a barber shop next month will be called pacific cuts, specialising in fading and the traditional haircuts. i only decided to do this because i couldnt believe myself when i saw everyones haircuts!

Three questions:

Where, when & how much?

Try Ziggy’s on Northbourne

Or you can try his son at Cook shops.

But I recommend Barber Ram at the back of Roger David at the mall, I have been going there since I had more hair.

Moe’s Barber in Tuggeranong next to the churches centre.
Pricing is reasonable, the guys are great and there is fox sports on the telly and use of a nintendo wii while they cut your hair.

I have a mate who swears by the barber at the Dickson tradies. About $12 I think and he uses a straight-razor.

I regularly see Michel @ Hairstylists of Manuka – as wank as it sounds, he’s a sensible Italian bloke who doesn’t talk too much, listens to good opera music and shaves my head with a straight blade for a reasonable price. What’s more to want?

Hair by Charles in Petrie Plaza do a good job.

Try the barber shop in the Woden Tradies Club – he always seems to be flatchat.

Ritva at Hackett shops can only do short back and sides. I imagine it is cheap= there are ony ever pensioners in there.

And of course, if you want to get your hair done and support one of the most awesome music talents in town at the same time, then get in touch with Marji Curran.

I don’t know if she has a wider net presence, but her Farcebook site for hair is here:

The bloke who used to cut hair at O’Connor shops has shut up shop, I find I’m the last to know. His were amazingly cheap.

Christi’s next to Gus’s was about $26 last time I was there, but they’re good and do what you ask them to.

There’s a barber’s at Mawson I used recently and they were great, though more than $12.

I was in a rush before going on stage last week and got one in a hurry at a salon. Maybe others would be fine with this but I blanched when he said $57! Mea culpa; I didn’t ask up front. And I knocked back the hair shampoo (maybe that’s part of the standard fee structure). I’ve never had my hair shampoo’d in a salon and at my age I’m not going to start!

Ziggy’s on Northbourne or the ancient Italian guy behind target in Quangers (if he is still there). Good barbers are thin on the ground northside, I usually wait for my bi-monthly trip up to QLD for a haircut at a barber instead of paying a fortune for a short back and sides from the pre-pubescent Philipino girl at the local unisex salon.

Joe Sorrentino at Mawson is most definitely a barber from the old school. And there’s Phantom comics to read while you wait 😉

I remember when Joe was at Pearce Shops (until about the late 1980s). He used to have a mini sports store in the shop as well selling bike stuff. When we had a puncture and needed a repair kit or a new pump we’d get it from Joe.

Thirded. Now charges $25, but he does a great job.

I always like the work from the Argentinian fellow at Erindale.

Have tried the place next to Gus’s…pretty old school and exactly what I wanted….until one of the new staff on a 457 visa took the clippers to my mono-brow…had to wipe up the wee after my family stopped laughing.

Anyone who charges more the $15 for a number 2 isn’t worth going to.

How much did they charge for number 1s? Number 2s in public like that must have been a bit embarrassing I imagine.

Anyone who charges more the $15 for a number 2 isn’t worth going to.

Get yourself a decent set of clippers from Myer’s for $45 and the haircuts are free after the third one.

Head south to Tuggers, find the Homeworld Centre adjacent to The Despised Hyperdome, find the Sportmans Warehouse and head down the passageway between the Warehouse and the Bike Shop – the best barber on the southside is just there on your left.

I use Vish at cook shops, he’s a proper barber. (Was known as Heinz Barbers)

Reasonable price and a good cut.

The guys near Gus’ Cafe in the city might be worth a try. They’re a bit old skool. IIRC they charge around $20 for a cut but I haven’t used them for a few years now.

There’s also supposed to be a barber in Fyshwick that gets a few mentions, but I can’t recall his name sorry.

O’Connor shops, near the Post Office, also has a barber, but I’ve never used him.

Where would be convenient for you?

Try Ziggy’s on Northbourne, or the big barbershop at Dickson. Men go to barber’s. Hairdressers are for sheila’s.
