Men's Haircuts

In the past month, I’ve seen an explosion of guys with crazy hair styles.

All sorts of strange short styles and crazy colours.

It got me thinking, where can you go in Canberra to get a decent trim without Fabio wanting to mouse and tint your locks for $200?

So straight male Rioters, where do you go to get your hair cut?

Who’s best?

Valley Hairdressers in Mawson. Is the best Mens haircut you can get. The only Mens Hairdresser I believe to be its equal is in Florence Italy so it will be cheaper to go to Valley Hairdressers in Mawson.

Cut-throat blade trimming = Hep infection roulette

Valley Hairdressers in Mawson. Traditional barber shop, cut-throat razor to trim sideburns and neck hair, $20 for blokes – paradise. And it has the most APALLING collection of pictures to illustrate styles you may wish to choose from – I’m sure every single one of them were taken in the (early) 1980’s and featured in magazines for men who are fond of men. Worth the $20 just for a laugh…

I go to Paul the Barber in Woden Tradies. Cheap efficient beard trms a speciality.

Paulie’s great. My hubby gets his hair cut there. Can definitely recommend him.

Pris

I shave my head myself.
The reason that I do that though…
Is because I am going bald.
I looked noticed I was going bald…
looked into advanced hair.
(Strand by Strand replacement therapy = a glued on wig – by the way)
Anyway… I was going bald. Couldn’t do anything about it.
“Rightio nature… Two can play at this game!” BZZZZZZZZZZ!

If you’re Southside try the place at Tuggers Homeworld in the arcade next to Sportsman’s warehouse, Under $20 and no Mice, tints or crazy colours.

I’ll second this place… Its the only place my ex would get his hair cut ! Excellent service and no appointments needed – just walk in and sit down.

Plus I’m a girl and I highly rate them. Probably the cheapest and best haircuts I ever got !

I think most of the knobby frosting/gelling/mousing is done by hetro blokes doing the metrosexual thing myself. Don’t worry, I loathe ’em too….

Do “metrosexuals” actually exist? Or do they consist of just a few closeted gays, and a few guys who will put up with any image if they think there’s the remotest chance it will get them laid. (at last)

Oh they exist, and they’re scary. Like the couple (man and woman that is) who were walking through the Canberra Centre last month wearing lime green and a bit of facial hair (woman too) and with heavily styled and moussed hair so that both of them had a tilted beehive.

@Simbo – Curtin is unique in that it has two barbers and a hair salon all next to each other. I’ve tried each and Fiori’s is the best.

But do you put sunscreen on the head?

I loathe all the smelly gunk hairdressers put on your head, it’s got worse in recent years, it all smells like lollies and attracts bees.

This fashion for being bald is going to see a lot of blokes with skin cancer on their heads, I reckon.

As a clipper-er, the advantage to it is… we go bald anyway, this way you don’t waste time trying to cover it up anyway. It’s sorta a fact of life, as you get older, you get the big bald patch. Either you hide it or you embrace it…

I’m looking forward to embracing a comb-over: I think it looks very stylish. 🙂

And I’ll be driving an MX-5!!!!!

I’m a gay bloke but I pretty much go with the clippers myself for a number-1 job on the head and the beard (either wielded by me or, if I’m not willing to put up with an hour worth of double-checking my head for the patches I’ve missed, wielded by the barbers across the road in Curtin shops – mostly reasonably nice, although the Curtin ones do have a tendency recently to have their 14 year old daughter clipper my head, which I think is slightly taking the piss…

The old fella out the back of O’Connor shops is a bargain at $9. His clippers may be a bit rusty, and his hands may not be as steady as they used to be… but for $9 I can afford to let it grow out for a few days. It has that dingy old barbarshop feel, and he’s got nudie calendars dating back as far as the early 80s from what I can tell.

He opens at 7:45AM Tuesday-Friday and stays until business drops off.

Wahl BaldFader – best ever home clippers – about $80 at the Shaver Shop. Faultless performance for 3 years. Trims almost as close as the aforementioned Quattro. No other electric clipper gets it as short.

Righto Gobbo. Fair quaint yourself there boss

I got one @ Urban Hair in Yazza for $25 with a fully qualified girl

Now that’s a bargain! How long do you get to keep her for?

Bout 25/30mins. Gave me a scrub and a head rub too

Probably the best aspect was the magazines, in this full salon they had Top Gear and Wheels. Spot on Bevan

@deye – ‘Yazza’ appears to be a quaint colloquialism for Yarralumla.

I learn something I wish I hadn’t everyday here. 🙂

I second Morgan, Ziggy’s is the best. I’ll probably get another cut there when I visit for christmas.

L’ Homme in Woden. Small barber shop outside the Woden Plaza across from CPS Credit union. Been going to him for 20 years (back when he had a full salon called L’ Homme et la Femme in the Woden Interchange).

Heard a few mates at Uni talk about Axis, which I think is near the ANU and Martinos in the City. Looked at both of them and think their a bit fruity, guess it’s why no ones listed them yet. Anyway, people I know like them.

TGs used to have some nice eyecandy but she moved to Sydney. So now I’m all about MelanieM in Manuka. Sarah is a total babe. There is even a mirror conveniently placed in front of you so you can watch her work.

If you want a style cut rather than short back and sides, call up salons and find out their rates. I got one @ Urban Hair in Yazza for $25 with a fully qualified girl

Looks tidier than any barber cut I can get

where the heck is Yazza ?

Mr Igglepiggle and bubba Igglepiggle both got done with the clippers in the back room this morning- easy!

The barber in Manuka Court opposite Le Rendezvous. They’ve even recently upgraded the chairs for waiting customers to a couple of nice couches!

Ritva’s at hackett – short back and sides only – and decor form 1970.

This fashion for being bald is going to see a lot of blokes with skin cancer on their heads, I reckon.

Snarky – I’m with you… Weekly hit with the clippers – razor 0. Upfront cost of $30 but no ongoing costs, except the beer.

R. Slicker – I’ve tried the blade, but it hurts and bleeds like hell when you cut your head. Also I find a clean shaven scalp too grippy/tacky.

luther_bendross12:54 pm 29 Nov 08

Vote #3 for Doms @ Dickson. $30 gets me a haircut and a pint from the Irish joint around the corner while the other half is still lining up in Woolies.

I go to Duntroon. It’s $17 but it’s an old style mens barbers with lots of swearing, jokes etc. You don’t have to be in the military and they’ll cut your hair the way you want it. I’ve never had anything other than short back and sides through…

Nambucco Deliria12:11 pm 29 Nov 08

I go to Paul the Barber in Woden Tradies. Cheap efficient beard trms a speciality.

Every morning after showering apply a Quattro razor to the entire scalp. Looks good and you can kiss the barber goodbye.

In the back yard with a $25 Breville hair trimmer. 15 mins, tops, parking not an issue, beer freely available 🙂

If you’re Southside try the place at Tuggers Homeworld in the arcade next to Sportsman’s warehouse, Under $20 and no Mice, tints or crazy colours.

Gungahlin Al10:40 am 29 Nov 08

As usual – ‘pends where ya are…
In Gungahlin, Tayden Hair down by Yerrabi Pond. Squidge over $20. Good style.
Haven’t been near a barber in decades.

2 min. That should be long enough for you to get your shorts done.

Another vote for Doms at Dickson. Though I got charged $21 yesterday – must be inflation.

Christies in town (next to Gus’s). About $20. No fuss, no mousse, and very convenient.

Pommy bastard8:41 am 29 Nov 08

I’ll second Gobbo.

I use Heinz in Cook.

I’ve no desire to be styled by a homosexual gent, I’m very happy to look like a bloke thanks.

Mousse are for shooting at, gel is for jelly, razor cuts are to be administered to bad guys.

My missus! 20 buck remington with a number 3 attachment…. priceless. For everything else there’s fabio!

Fiori the Barber in Curtin. A great cut for $17. Good magazines too!

Zygys near Fletcher Jones in Civic for $18, NEwsradio or the Cricket.

A few of my compatriots go to the barber in the arcade at Manuka. No appointments, ABC Classic FM, the paper and reasonable prices and service. Occasional sightings of the Air Chief Marshall getting a short back and sides also!

Where can I get my locks moused? I’m looking for a new look.

Heinz in Cook (Now run by a Fijian chap)

No nonsense traditional barber.

Cheap and very good.

Doms in Dickson.

Proper old fashioned barbers for less then $20.
