Issues with men’s health, isolation, loneliness and depression are becoming significant health issues in Australia. Men’s Sheds are emerging as a community-driven way of providing significant and practical support for these and other men’s issues.

There are already Men’s Sheds in Canberra – the Majura Men’s Shed (Dickson) and the Lanyon Homestead Shed (Greenway). However, there aren’t any similar services on the north side of Canberra.

As well as a general introduction to Men’s Sheds, the forum will examine the need for a Men’s Shed in Belconnen, and how community groups in Belconnen can work together to get a Men’s Shed established.

It is SO wierd that a story about a Men’s shed brings out the feminist bashing comments….

Not every man is bastard filled bastard, with a bastard filling Pandy. Considering the fact that the feminst agenda is partially based on equality, I hope the shoe you put in your mouth is made of something you like the tase of.

What about a ‘girls only Men’s shed’?

Maybe Fernwood could sponsor it.

Because having a place where men can only go is fundamentally wrong to the feminist movement, all-the-while female only places seem quite reasonable to them.

The simple theory of “hook, line and sinker” IIRC.

This will not do.

Allowing men to have their own space, will undermine the feminist agenda.

Actually there sort of is one already in central west belconnen – the Vietnam Vets have an old depot near the oval in Page.

It is a good idea.

A lot of heavy drinking older men find it very difficult to give up going to the pub, even when they have liver disease, cos there is nowhere else they can go to be around people.

What a great idea. I’ve seen these in country towns, on TV shows. I think the excellent ACT Stateline did a thing on these, and I dunno who first thought of them, but it’s a winner.

Can we get a bit real here! Men’s Sheds is exactly what it says. Forget the political correctness.

We are talking about men generally in ages greater than 50 years, not to be confused with ‘man lovers’. Grumpy (and Cranky) old men should not be confused with any other form of life!

Men’s Sheds are to be greatly admired, because until you are in a position to appreciate the lack of social contact (which is shorthand for life as an old bloke can be pretty diferent from the younger years), these places allow contact between the afflicted. Males do not seem to have the easy ability to make friends – it requires effort. These sheds facilitate such contact, and as mentioned, have medical positives.

I’d prefer it to be called Mens Refuge. There’s certain legal protections afforded the naming that mens shed is not going to receive.

Perhaps this makes the article make more sense:

The February 2008 Belconnen Community Forum will be held at:

7.30pm, Tuesday 19 February 2008
Community Room, upstairs Belconnen Library
Chandler Street, Belconnen

The BCC hopes that everyone has had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas and New Year Break!

To kick off our regular monthly forums for this year, we will be discussing the concept of Men’s Sheds and how they can improve male mental health and reduce social isolation.

As well as a general introduction to Men’s Sheds, the forum will examine the need for a Men’s Shed in Belconnen, and how community groups in Belconnen can work together to get a Men’s Shed established.

Perhaps the organisers should think about a name change for this service?

“Men’s Sheds” sounds like a homosexual pickup haunt/beat.

I just wondered if they have mens stools in mens sheds…

It was a mental map to start with…and I wasn’t too far off.

We should change to topic title to “RiotAct contributors show lack of proficiency in map reading”

Oh yeah, the bloody golf-course, still the margin’s pretty thin. Dunlop snakes out pretty close too, though.

Holt is the westernmost suburb in Canberra. Check your map.

Deadmandrinking3:52 pm 15 Feb 08

My suspicions lead me to believe that also Thumper. Maps help too.

Deadmandrinking3:44 pm 15 Feb 08

Actually, Macgregor or Dunlop would the westernmost suburbs in Canberra. Belconnen itself is roughly Canberra’s north-west. Dickson is actually more north-east.

I think they mean NorthWest side – I always get the sensation that I am travelling North from Black Mt when I am actually travelling to the westernmost suburb in Canberra.

part ov da east-side massif init???

Great idea, but since when was Dickson not “north side”?
