Mexican Tamales in Canberra?

To my wife and I being Mexican food fans, the lack of Mexican/Spanish restaurants in Canberra can sometimes be frustrating.

I am only aware of the two in Manuka – Franscisco’s and Legends.

Excellent restaurants but a little far away to our location. Google has come up null so I thought I’d thought I’d try my luck here, any help would be much appreciated.

Is anyone aware of a Spanish/Mexican restaurant/fast food place that makes Tamales in Canberra?

I’d be surprised if any Spanish restaurant would make tamales, as it is essentially a latin-american thing. They share a common language but Spanish and Mexican are very different cuisines.

Tamales are more Central-American. I haven’t seen them in cafes in South America where the chivito is the standard fare for a quick snack. Mexican food is “bean centric” wheras South American is all about beef, chicken and bacon.

There is also Zambrero in Braddon, but I don’t think they do tamales either.

They don’t make Tamales at Franciscos or Legends unfortunately but we love all the other foods they do!

Thanks everyone for the suggestion, will head out to the markets this weekend. Shall try the Spanish club too. Cheers

Tamales are available at the Gorman House markets on weekends, have been for a long time now. I hear the best time to get them in around 1pm ..

The Spanish Club at Narrabundah might be worth a try. Haven’t eaten there, but a few people I know have and reckon the food was okay. No idea if they do tamales.

I think it is only open Fri/Sat/Sun, so would be a good idea to call before you go there to check their opening hours.

don’t know about restaurants but there is an ecuadorian food stall at gorman house markets every saturday which makes great tamales and pupusas if you’re happy sitting outdoors to eat them 🙂

A couple of years ago I bought tamales from a stall at Gorman House markets.
