The Canberra Times informs us that one of the most revered Canberrans, Michael Milton is recovering in hospital after running his bicycle into a garbage truck.

Canberra Paralympian Michael Milton is recovering in hospital with spinal, shoulder and rib fractures after a cycling accident in Dickson last week.

The five-time Paralympian lost control of his bike along Cowper Street and collided with a garbage truck last Friday.

Milton spent the long weekend in Canberra Hospital in a stable condition, but had no memory of what had caused the accident.

Here’s hoping he’s back on his foot soon.

like, a large slow garbarge truck, that was in your forward vision for some time..? al’s reason is much more plausible and there sheets the blame rightly at the inadequate driving of the bus operator. i just thought that the article didn’t, as so many reports of driver failure in reports on collisions don’t, attribute appropriate repsonsibility. we too often get ‘the car lost control’ or such phrasing. take it on the chin, michael.

Maybe he was rounding a bend, avoiding a dog, watching a magpie???

Why does he have to take it on the chin? He wasnt winging? (& hasnt been on the cycle forums for thet matter either).

how does one ‘lose control of a cycle and crash into a garbage truck’? on cowper street?? perhaps ‘rode recklessly and crashed…’ would be closer to the mark? let’s sheet the blame where it belongs here.

I dunno. I got the shirt scared out of me on Tuesday morning when an ACTION bus on Flemington passed just 300mm from my handlebar and almost lost control.

And when I mentioned to the driver at the traffic lights that I though he had passed ‘just a bit’ too close, he said “I didn’t even see you.” (Note: no ‘sorry’.) Despite having my rear light flashing away epileptically, and it being broad daylight. No doubt ACTION’s James Roncon would again just say “the video footage from the bus does not accord with your interpretation of the incident.”

One loses control of a bicycle the same as one loses control of anything: a major external factor interrupts your progress, or you make a mistake.

Probably not paying attention whilst riding due to taking a swig of Canberra Milk because he he he he he hee’s a Canberra Milk kid!

I applaud his skiing style, but i think that he is just being a smart ass by riding a bike and thats what he gets.

He got the death wobbles after his missing foot slipped out of the peddals

I GET TEH JOEKS!!!!

Apparently I don’t until after I’ve posted. Oh well, at least it’s given you all someone to laugh at for the day.

Um, I may be wrong, but I think that was just a joke. Garbage truck…rubbish…get it?

I giggled about it until I saw the other comments.

Many people’s experience is to the contrary. Don’t suddenly become a good bloke because you’re without a leg

Why bring this up when he has had an accident? Is it really relevant?

I wonder if you can get 3rd Party Property insurance for a treddly.

You can get public liability insurance with Pedal Power, covers you if you cause an accident.

I make no judgment as to whether reverence is warranted.

That’s rubbish!

Why exactly HC?

I vividly recall remembering nothing of a bike stack I had as a teenager. From the first wobble to being sprawled on the road after, busted and broken – nothing in between. It happens. Big bangs and electrical surges in the brain I put it down to.

Really? What did he say to you?

(or is this a bad garbage truck joke I only just got?)
