CityNews are reporting that middle management has cost angry old man’s radio a rare talent:

DRIVE-TIME talk back presenter Mike Welsh has resigned from radio station 2CC this month after almost 11 years.

Welsh told “CityNews” the reason behind his resignation was a “long-running issue with middle management” that could not be solved.

“I’m disappointed it had to end like this and that we couldn’t get certain things done,” he says.

Bigzy and Solly both gone, goodness the good news keeps rolling in.

I’m sure they’re both nice people, but they were just excrutiating. Of course, all commercial breakfast radio and drive-time radio is excrutiating so they aren’t in a very exclusive club.

What is a 2CC?

Seriously though, who wants to listen to talky talky when there is music?

Personally I thought Mr Welsh ‘called it as he saw it’ with a Canberra perspective. What a pity the issue could not be resolved.

A further comment about 2CC – Mr Parton’s program has been reasonably balanced journalistically until recently. However, Craig Emerson has not been replaced so there is nothing to balance the extreme right wing views of the Institute of Public Affairs, and Lib Greg Hunt’s government mantras. I hope they balance this up soon.

Welsh was out of place on 2CC with his spiteful criticism of Tony Abbott. During the horror Gillard years while other announcers on the station were slamming Gillard and calling for an election Welsh kept calling Abbott “the thug” and saying Abbott’s mantra is “I’ve got nothing”. He caused a serious rift with 2GB when he repeatedly criticised Ray Hadley and Chris Smith, and Smith was so fed up he called Welsh “an angry old man” despite the majority of Smith’s listeners on 2GB not knowing who Mike Welsh was.

Following Welsh’s winning of the radio industry award last year I commented on Mark Parton’s Facebook page that Parton should have won that award rather than “I’ve got nothing” Welsh. This year the judges agreed with me giving Mark not one but two awards. Welsh got nothing. He has now spat the dummy and walked out on the station which cut him so much slack and turned a blind eye to his many on-air indiscretions.

Canberra’s radio scene has suddenly improved and it is hoped a new announcer more in line with the 2CC/2GB ethos will take over from the gladly departed Welsh.

Not sure of the point you are making. Welshy is critical of most politicians & rightly so.
Everything he said about Abbott was spot on & Ray Hadley and Chris Smith are both nincompoops of the highest order.
He is one of the few journalists in town that takes on unpopular issues that affect local people and calls the clowns in the ACT Government to account.

I often disagree with him but think he is courageous & a man of principle.

I have to ask: were you born stupid, or did you just gradually regress into that state?

As much as I hate Rudd and Gillard, I do agree with Welsh’s view about Abbott having ‘nothing’ – and sure as hell knows that Abbott has had plenty of time since the election to disprove it, yet he hasn’t done so…….yet!

Stop the boats (& the NBN!) seems about all he’s got.

Agreed. Welsh seemed to be the only presenter with a brain.

In fact, if you do not poop on Hadley or smith then you prove you have no brain.

If he only stops the boats than thats easily enough. Labor wasted $12 billion by changing Howards successful people smuggling laws not much I know its only around the same amount as the current interest rate bill paying off Labors debt.
