Milk Crate Man looks out over Garema Place

Mad Kiwi has spotted this fellow dominating the skyline of the Civic.

How did he get there? Where is he from? How long will he be there?

Anyone got any answers?

UPDATED: Apparently the Canberra Times’ Today column (now adorned by the exiled WIN’ner Geraldine Nordfeldt) had this a couple of days ago and claimed the work is a homage to the Belconnen Remand Centre protestor/escapees.

That’s a big call. I remember driving past the original light up cube in the 90’s, beaping the car horn and yelling loudly to get it to light up.

I do like the crate man though and intend on checking him out on Saturday.

My favourite piece of public art in Canberra – EVER! Inventive, amusing, colourful, a hint of “up yours” with the use of materials and placement, and – best of all – no six figure sum spent on it. Will be a great landmark for Garema Place ie “I’ll meet you underneath the giant milk crate man”. LOVE IT!!!

Can’t be, crate man is wearing a shirt.

Some people have way to much time on their hands coming up with these ideas… Love it!

Farrrrrrrrrrrrrk – good to see the tax dollar being spent by public servants who have enough time to take photos in their “breaks” and post it to the RiotACT. I am glad to work for award wages to give them the opportunity.

????

Are you the same mad kiwi that started this thread?

The Spotswood Crate Man is very well endowed!

There was an article about the Crate Men in The Age a few weeks ago, a website is here Crate Men

This is more creative than the other rubbish that stanhopeless has wasted millions of dollars on. Brilliant.

…….Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall…..

Looks great!

Nah, from a distance I reckon he looks like Terrance or Phillip (South Park).

Wouldn’t he need to have one leg stuck up in the air?

there’s heaps of them in melbourne..

I’m seeing a fun weekend ahead, building hundreds of these and setting them up all around someone’s house at midnight…

In Soviet Canberra, crate milks YOU!

Look out JB you’ll be accused of lifting stories from CT! They covered this a few days ago. (That would be a turn-up…)

Ha ha! Better update with some attribution or there’ll be snide little editorials in tomorrow’s CT.

It’s the jumper.

I think he’s great, and an indictement on the mess that some of the Garema businesses leave in their back laneways – and out front in some cases too (Dobinsons are you reading this???).

isnt there a $500 fine or something for having a milk crate ?

Looks like a giant lego man.

That’s what makes it awesome.

I for one salute our giant crate overlord.

Looks like a giant lego man. I’m sure his days are numbered though. Some ACT pube will be having a minor coronary thinking about the possibility of a strong wind blowing him off his perch and crushing 23456234 weekend shoppers.

that is excellent, but I bet the milk people will be after their milk crates!

The first question which leaped into my mind was; “How much has Stanhopeless paid for this bit of community art?”

That’s AWESOME. Hope it stays, Canberra needs more funky street art rather than sheep friendly pubic art. Oh whoops, I meant to say public… or did I?

I loved the random paste ups that used to appear on the shed next to the Lonsdale/Cooyong intersection.. now it’s boring brown all over again. Yawn.

I’m ‘crate’ful someone went to this much trouble and I hope they ‘milk’ it for all it’s worth!

Groan! No second prizes for Overheard.

I saw him yesterday and snapped off a couple of pics intending to send them in, but if he’s been there for a while I didn’t want to milk ‘crate man’.

I like him a lot. Is it part of multicultural/fring?

He apparently went up sometime Saturday night/Sunday morning. He’s held in place by cable ties. The tenants are pleased with him, and want him to remain. I hope he does, but maybe he’ll offend the government as much as bill posters do? I can almost hear the mumblings about ‘public safety’ etc.
