Actew have shared their latest efforts installing a mini hyrdo plant onto their Murrumbidgee to Googong Water Transfer pipeline:

A big day at the Murrumbidgee to Googong Water Transfer Mini-Hydro facility near Burra Creek as the new turbine arrives for installation. Join Construction Manager Matthew Richardson on site as he meets some of the key players involved and details regarding how the unit will operate.

[Filming on this short was kindly undertaken by ChannelVision. Documentary maker Richard Snashall works with ACTEW Corporation to help us capture and document the Enlarged Cotter Dam and other water security projects for our Heritage Archive]

This green technology is fantastic stuff.

Of course we shouldn’t actually implement any of it…

No, we should burn more coal. This energy made from free fuel is the stuff of communism and shouldn’t be allowed.

That’s right. Who the hell do we pay for free energy?!?!?

m00nee pulls up his deck chair and esky and waits for Charlotte Meany to go into hyper drive about how this will destroy her life style, as well as stopping her free range chickens from laying, sending the local eco economy into such a downward spiral that we will all feel so dirty that we will need to have even more showers…..

It’s a turbine – and everyone knows that turbines are LOUD! Not only that, but it’s been installed inside its own concrete house, which everyone knows is really just a BUNKER, like they have in WARS, and WARS are very LOUD and DIRTY. Obviously, this means that lots of Canberrans are going to have a whole heap of LOUD SHOWERS, which will mean less EGGS for her.

This is probably just a further excuse to destroy the pristine Burra Creek wilderness so Canberrans can have 11 showers each/day!

So, we learn all about where it is made, how much power it will produce etc. but nothing about its cost. As long as it is “green”, nothing else matters apparently. Let’s see, it will power the equivalent of 600 homes so that is about $1.2 million retail electricity per annum. Sounds impressive; so how much did it cost?

Not much, it will easily pay for itself and then some.
The only problem being it’s only for recovering part of the electricity used to pump the water over the hill in the first place.

But good rant against “green” stuff anyway.

Very interesting. Tnks for posting it. Enough leccy for 600 homes, brilliant.

Doubt it will power 600 homes. It is designed to recover some of the power used to pump the water up from Angle Crossing. At best it means the pumping costs will be less than they’d be without it.

I think his was the first ever. On a similar type thing ; those two methane gas powered generators at the Mugga tip, are they very successful ?

Awesome.

Plant powering itself with Australian design/made generators. Good idea.
