Minicabs in Canberra?

Hi Rioters,

I’ve stumbled across these guys: http://www.transportbygeorge.com.au/

From the website it looks like they are running a mini-cab operation of sorts – you get a taxi, but only if you ring for them.

Has anyone used them? Are they any good? Is this entirely legal?

Karl

What we need is a regular mini cab/bus service that travels along main roads only and picks up and sets down anywhere that is safe and costs about a gold coin. I reckon the taxis and ACTION buses would start panicking then – especially if they could carry bicycles and other baggage.

So ACTION but running at an even greater loss then?

The main corridors are the profitable routes – it’s the suburban routes that cost a bundle.

So think through what you are suggesting…

I’m suggesting that someone – don’t care who – should provide a transport service along the main corridors that people will actually use. (Obviously if ACTION was to give up their profitable route they would lose money but – think about it yourself – maybe someone else could provide an even better service)

If you are determined to contradict yourself and cherry pick Ill leave you to it. 🙂

I don’t think golden_youth is from Transport by George. S/he was just quoting from the website.

Ok – just over here for a sec, Goldie.
It’s not generally viewed as “positive customer relations” to open your first contact to many in the potential target market with a sarcastic rhetorical question.
But, you knew that already huh?

@schmeah, why don’t you try these people, and let us know if they know where Calvary is?

Yeah but will they know where and what “Calvary Hospital” is?

Couldn’t believe it when I called Canberra Cabs from the hospital and had to have a 5 minute conversation with the booking agent, spelling out “Calvary” multiple times, explaining it was a hospital in Bruce (a suburb, not a person) and trying to explain the concept of “taxi pick up spot #15” ..

In the end I gave up, there was just no way that taxi was turning up.

Canberra Hire Cars is brilliant for this too. Because they keep their appointments…

Had them booked for my wedding. A few cars for various guests. Booked months in advance. All written down. Reconfirmed closer to make sure all set. Times, locations. I got a call on the morning of the wedding advising that (Multiple) cars were broken down and they were unable to send spare cars. It seemed my wedding wasn’t high enough priority as they were not able or willing to call in other aerial group vehicles to cover the gap. Very strange.

A few weeks after the wedding I called the management to find out what had gone wrong. They refused to take my call.

Much later when mentioning my experience to a group of friends, an ex aerial person suggested cars had probably been syphoned off to do something more profitable off the books, which was (allegedly) standard operating procedure, but got caught short.

Sounds good to me. Taxis stink at making appointments since they just send them out as a general callout at around the time. It’s particularly bad around shift change or early morning.

So this is your top option for that morning ride. Make the appointment and know that appointments is all they actually do.

Canberra Hire Cars is brilliant for this too. Because they keep their appointments, sometimes they don’t have a car available at the time you want. But of course they already know, they will even tell you and they help you plan to get there earlier or later rather than sitting there stranded at the time your taxi was due going “where’s my taxi?”. They are a limousine service so they cost a little more but the increase in service is staggering.

@NoImRight, I agree, any competition is good. If they stick to their claim of providing baby seats, I’ll be cheering!

@KarlG They don’t look like a mini cab company to me, they look like affordable hire cars.

That would be a Tiumphant outcome – although totally unrealistic

Any Triumph is worthwhile. You should know that.

Not the flashest of websites but happy to see any form of even limited competition take off.

Yikes, mini-cabs. I moved countries to get away from the scourge of mini-cabs.

Did you even read the website??

“Legally, we are accredited as a “Private hire car service” – which is a service where a car with chauffeur provides transport for people.

While we provide a transport service, we are not a taxi service – our services must be booked at least 30 minutes prior to your travel.

Yet we’re not a limousine service either – our prices are set so that on average you will pay no more for our services when compared to a taxi.

All our Prices are fixed and our customers will know the exact fare at time of booking confirmation. We provide guaranteed pickup and only engage experienced and reliable drivers.

We cater for special needs like babyseats or people in wheelchairs who can transfer to a car seat.

However, ACT regulations prevent us from accepting Taxi subsidy scheme vouchers as payment.”
