The ACT Govt are establishing a position for Commissioner for Children to promote and protect the Territory’s young people as taken from this ABC story. Of course if the Minister responsible was actually responsible then the position probably wouldn’t be needed.

But it is and here is what the Minister not responsible has to say.

Hahahahaha!!!!

A minister responsible?

In the ACT?

Nah…..

i like direct election, but for specific jobs.

as it is our whole process is so abstracted that we have to vote on pretty words and ignore reality.

in any event this makes a disposable public servant carry the can so it’s certainly good for the government and who knows, they might get something done.

I think this is a good idea.

There will be times when children in government care need someone to stand up for their rights. Better that it’s a Commissioner who is not directly elected by the people (and therefore might play politics with the issue) and not directly part of the Department they may need to argue with.

Also a good idea to have someone whose role is to advocate for children’s rights. We have advocates for women’s issues (Office of the Status of Women) and consumers (ACCC), why not someone for children?

Good on Katy for following through on the recommendation in the report.
