Missing Chickens

Has anyone any idea about what happened to the chicken shop in Cooleman Court called Chicken Galore? The shop was boarded up when I last popped by without any explanation as to if it was reopening, relocating or what.

Anyone know? Or can anyone recommended a similar business somewhere in close proximity to Weston Creek?

Thanks Rioters.

I miss the old run down Coolo! Coolo is feeling more and more like a big shopping mall and not just a local shopping center.

My son will miss the animatronic chickens at Chicken Galore, but it must have been a very marginal business as it was rare I’d ever see them with a customer.

I don’t know about that. Chickens Galore was owned by an old school friend of mine (ironically his nickname at school was Chook). He also owned the chicken shop on the ground floor of Monaro Mall before it was gobbled up by the Canberra Centre. He didn’t quite own a Ferrari or a Lamborghini but he was still doing very nicely, thank you.

Also sad that places like the gym under the indoor sports centre had to move. Apparently the landlord wanted to basically double their rent (for a dug out basement under the indoor sports place)! Once again, landlords would prefer no rent over reasonable rent…..

Sad they had to move? they moved about a block away.. and the new fit out in the old Video Ezy location looks 10x better than their last location….

While the new edge location has way safer/easier parking and has a newer fitout, the group fitness room is a lot smaller and they no longer have child minding. These probably aren’t issues for most people, but they are for sorely missed by people I know. It’s a pity the new place isn’t as big.

Who’s to say that this wasn’t a conscious decision made by the owner so the business could remain financially viable? It’s not like child minding would have been turning a profit.

If I was a business owner reducing the services I offered, i’d blame the evil landlord.

What’s sad is the name of the new place going in where Edge was, ‘Western Basement’. Someone has Weston/Western mixed up.

As for the chicken place, they ended up becoming little more than a Lilydale reseller and Woolworths was on the attack with their free range chicken section tripling in size.

I live in the area. I shop elsewhere now as it’s such a hassle for parking.

+ 1, I also stopped shopping there around six months ago, as parking has become hopeless. It will only get worse when the new housing developments are complete.

if you are willing to go for a bit of a drive – there is an independent fresh chicken shop in the Lanyon market place in Condor – head south on Streeton or the Parkway, then pay the toll and follow Drakeford Drive thorugh the lights and roundabouts following the signs to Tharwa and you will see the Lanyon shops when you get to the Gordon/Condor area. About 15 mins drive south for those in Weston Creek. A good range in the shop.

Do you mean Lanyon Valley Meats? We used to shop there quite frequently, but service and quality has declined. Now, it’s either Unique Meats (behind the Marketplace, where High Country used to be) or Calwell Quality Meats.

There was pretty much a wake for Mr Chops when I read this post out to people at work, most were shocked that it happened so fast and plenty had been long-term customers. I hope Centre Management are happy now…twats.

How about we all not just shop there? Screw coolo. I only use it for mais, lava and sakeenas.

I wish someone would come and take my neighbours rooster………………….

Sushi opening up there instead……try woden for other chicken shop

I think the Coolo chicken place was preferred by some (over the franchise place in Woden) because it sold a lot of free range chicken. I’m pretty sure the franchise place doesn’t – but they do sell some good quick-meal stuff.
Sad that Mr Chops has gone. They’ve been there 20+ years AFAIK.

Shame Shame….this is happening everywhere now.

I used to shop there from time to time, especially before Lenards came along

Newsagent that moved outside (Anketell St) at the Hyperdome closed down also.

Huge rent hike and the centre management wanted them to renovate their shopfront (and I assume lose the animatronic chickens). The last couple of times I purchased from them the chicken was still partially frozen anyway so I’m not feeling the loss, especially if we get a sushi place in exchange.

If Mr Chops doesn’t do chicken I’d recommend Jordo’s Chop Shop at Wanniassa. I know it’s not -that- close but they offer free delivery over $X and in my experience the quality is excellent .

Mates son used to work there at chickens galore rent went up and he closed I dearly miss the chicken sausage rolls

I was told yesterday that both of Mr Chop’s butcheries at Cooleman had closed to a huge rent hike. I presume the Chicken place has closed for the same reason.

Yep, that’s what I heard too.
Pity they didn’t do a deal to share some space with the new fish place in the building outside Coolo. That way they both could have saved some rent and screwed the Coolo owners (I don’t think they own the other building).
