Mitchell Park and Ride opens

The Greens’ Amanda Bresnan is taking credit for the Mitchell Park & Ride facility which Simon Corbell is opening today.

“We want to make it easier for the people of Gungahlin to get to and from places like Civic, Russell, Barton, Kingston and Fyshwick,” Ms Bresnan said.

“The new Mitchell Park & Ride is about providing options for people to park their car safely and for free, and to use a frequent and rapid bus service that takes them to an employment centre.

“It allows people to save on parking and petrol, but it’s also a chance to avoid the stress of peak-hour traffic on Northbourne Avenue.

“Making connections between different transport modes, such as buses and cars, is a key part of moving people around Canberra. Park & Ride facilities play an important part in making Canberra a more convenient and sustainable community.

“Through the Parliamentary Agreement, the Greens have already delivered a Park and Ride and Bike and Ride to Mawson, and these facilities are being designed for Erindale.

I know it is still early days, but I have never seen a single car parked in there. If it was located up near the shops it might do a bit better.

Is this a white elephant in the making?

How are people expected to cross the busy Flemington Road to get from their cars to the bus stop? Is there a pedestrian crossing there?

It may be called “Mitchell” Park & Ride, but it’s actually located in Lyneham (as is Exhibition Park and Canberra Racecourse). If you don’t believe me, check a map.

Care factor really…

But, it probably goes back to when the racecourse was here when I was a kid and Mitchell not even a glimmer in LDA’s eye.

These days we regard the district of Gungahlin as being the entire area between the two highways and out to the NSW border. Inc Hall.

Have you told the people in Hall yet that they are living in Gungahlin? 🙂

Technically, of course, Hall is in it’s own District – the only ACT district to contain only one locality (i.e. the village of Hall).

Can you show me? When I look at a map it looks like Mitchell and when I check the EPIC website their address is listed as Mitchell. Happy to be proven wrong, just asking the question – maybe I’m looking at the wrong map (Google Maps)

I think this may be more definitive than Google.

And any street directory would also show that it is actually Lyneham, and not Mitchell.

In fact, EPIC is actually half in Lyneham (and so the district of North Canberra) and half in Kenny (the district of Gungahlin).

Mitchell Park and Ride?

I thought it was a promo for some of the local Mitchell businesses. Perhaps they should get on board with a few minibuses at the gate.

Space for 100 cars. That’s a whole 2 busloads of people (given that carpooling appears to be all but non-existant in the ACT) All at a cost of $3000 per parking space.

Wow, consider me underwhelmed.
Now if they’d paved the entire rear carpark of EPIC right to Morriset Rd and Old Wells Station Rd then it might make a difference. Should fit a couple thousand cars in there.

Morrisett carpark is where we suggested, but the road connecting through to Antill St roundabout is at least a year off still, so this is a start.

The park’n’ride comes from the suggestion put by GCC in our submission to the Sustainable Transport Plan in 2007.

And yes it was always also about trying to reduce the NSW commuters rat running through the North Canberra suburbs (and Gungahlin people getting whole and sole blame from NC folk) and otherwise reducing congestion on Northbourne for those who can use PT.

Avoid stress perhaps, but not the traffic. Buses currently sit in the queue, just like everyone else.

Yep, the same as the data center was in Tuggeranong not Hume

They don’t think the folk commuting in from NSW will use it too?
