Simon Corbell is asking for the community to get involved in planning for the second stage of the vast Molonglo development.

“The community is invited to come and discuss the draft framework and see how their suggestions have been included.

“With its focus on the Molonglo River corridor, this is a very special part of Canberra and we want to hear what the community thinks.

“About 18,000 people will live in Molonglo Valley stage 2 in a mix of housing types. There will be a vibrant commercial centre, community facilities and safe transport networks. The open spaces will include the proposed Molonglo River corridor nature park.”

The community display and forum is on today at St Peters Anglican Church Hall, Weston. From 3pm you can talk to staff and look at plans, the forum kicks off at 6.30.

More direct bus services (which don’t meander around the suburbs) that travel North/South and East/West along major transport corridors and pick up/drop off at these additional parking points.

+ a million. I think if more buses went along main roads instead of stopping for one person every 75m they might be on the way to a better service. Either that, or continue with empty buses. Just sayin.

Too true. If, for instance, they had a park-and-ride carpark (like the successful one at Mawson) somewhere near the tennis courts at Coolo, and then ran 2 or so buses DIRECTLY to belco and civic every morning (and night) that would greatly improve public transport use in Weston creek. As it is, to get to belco or civic, you catch a meandering bus thru the suburbs to Woden, then onto your destination on the ‘inter’ buses. Unfortunately in this day and age, that method is just too slow and frustrating to be a viable alternative for most workers. As Weston Creek is approx 2/3rds the population of somewhere like queanbeyan, surely a couple of direct buses isn’t too much to consider for the region?

I currently commute from west Belco to Woden via Coppins crossing road each day. I also frequently head from Belco out towards Urriara Crossing and beyond. Does anyone know if the planning accounts for traffic which has no interest in the centre of the new suburbs, but just wants to pass it by?

John Gorton Drive is to be built across the river somewhere near the existing Coppins Crossing connecting Cotter rd to William Hovell in a couple of places. Dual lanes each way.
The only issue is when they are going to build it.
Knowing our government, probably after the suburbs are finished and completely full.

Dual lane plus bike path for cotter road all the way through to Adelaide Avenue. One of these lanes should be a T2 lane. Parking at least at Tuggeranong Parkway and Adelaide Avenue and probably somewhere like Streton Drive. More direct bus services (which don’t meander around the suburbs) that travel North/South and East/West along major transport corridors and pick up/drop off at these additional parking points. I think there is some discussion about an upgrade and mini bus interchange at Adelaide Avenue/Yarra Glen as part of the Yarraumla Brickworks redevelopment but I suspect it is contingent on that proposal going ahead.

Is this a wish list, or what you saw/heard/asked for at the consultation?

Would go but I’m away at the mo’. Wonder if they’ll include any affordable Own Place house’n’land packages in this release?

I went to the last one of these – it was a joke. Plenty of people asked questions about roads, schools, pubic transport etc. The answers were pretty poor. I asked if there was anyone from Transport for Canberra in attendance, you know, the people who make and implement roads and public transport policy … no – but staff from the Land Development Agency were. i think that sums up the challenges facing any meaningful outcome from this public consultation quite well.

There will be inadequate roads in and out from day one.
There will be inadequate public transport from day one.

The government will rake it in from land sales and stamp duty.

I concur with dh. I also attended the previous consultation and while there was lots of platitudes about how they’re “listening” to what the public and nearby residents have to say ,…. the reality is they’re doing the bare minimum to actually resolve the major transport and infrastructure issues that are becoming obvious to the rest of us. A separate bike path and bus lanes would be a great start.

40,000 people are going to be living in Molonglo before too long. Cotter Road between the Parkway and Adelaide Ave is going to be a complete cluster f##*k.

There is no plan to upgrade *this* section.

You’d think they’ve consider this before? Also, the intersection of Coppins Crossing road and Glen Loch interchange is going to be a major headache soon enough.

I’m not going but can someone mention the need to duplicate cotter road near the parkway BEFORE this is completed. It is already pretty bad.

I think it’s already planned.

Awesome! 🙂 I expect some nice road side art work too.

Construction is already underway to fix the intersection at the RSPCA on Cotter road between the Parkway and Streeton Drive and majorly update the intersection at the end of Streeton Drive.

Don’t think anything is planned for the Cotter road between the Parkway and Adelaide Ave unfortunately. I’ll have to just keep cruising past you on my bike every morning while you are stuck there 🙂
