Molonglo housing stoush heating up

By johnboy - 17 July 2008 7

Yesterday the ABC noted that, despite promises of the ACT Government and the National Capital Authority (NCA) working in harmony from here to the hereafter, the two were at loggerheads over housing in the Molonglo Valley.

The particular problem appears to be “Central Molonglo” which runs behind Higgins and Hawker.

East Molonglo (across from the likes of Cook and Weetangera) is still on the boards as far as I understand the issues.

Anyway Andrew Barr is promising to go over the NCA’s heads and talk to Bod Debus about it.

Meanwhile the Greens’ Shane Rattenbury finds himself agreeing with the NCA. He also seems to be opposed to the development because it’s so 80’s style and “there were some regrettable musical and fashion trends from that time”.

What’s Your opinion?

The government should be developing land quickly at the moment, as a major part of the housing cost problem is lack of supply. It’s going to take years to work through anyway, but getting stuck in now will help.

Why doesn’t the government wait a year or two and see what happens to the housing market as a result of the coming global depression and all of the development in Gungahlin?

Expanding the tax base should not be the government’s primary goal.

Depends what you grow in the approaches.

If it’s not pine forests they should be OK.

I must be missing something – I seem to do that a lot these days, but wouldn’t putting a suburb closer to the brindabellas allow more incidents whereby fire comes to town again?

Ah, ‘Stoush’ – love that word! Haven’t heard it for a bit . . . Nearly as annoying as the old stalwart, ‘Embattled’, but perhaps less overused. I love banal ‘meeja’ words . . .

Sorry it’s a bit off-topic, but couldn’t resist!

Shane has now earned himself my last preference (I fill out the whole ballot). The 80’s ruled.

Such as the populus voting in green party members to the various parliaments around the joint with gay abandon.
