The ABC reports that the Canberra Raiders have convinced Joel Monaghan to stick around until for another three years.

“Canberra is the place where I grew up and I’ve played the best footy of my career here so it’s a given for me to stay,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward now to playing well for the Raiders and hopefully getting to the semi-finals again this year.”

This is excellent news.

Keeping Joel until the end of 2012 makes it more likely that his brother Michael will return to the Raiders, too, as they’ve both stated that they want to finish their careers playing on the same team.

Yesssss! *pumps fist triumphantly*

Keeping a State of Origin player and Kangaroo is a bit of a coup and a good sign for the future.
