Monaro Folk Society knees up

By Thumper 11 February 2009 20

The Monaro Folk Society is having a get together at the Old Canberra Inn tonight at 7.00.

The night is free for all comers (though you might consider joining and taking advantage of all the benefits of being part of MFS — the music, the dance, the spoken word, the contacts, the camaraderie, the festivals, the groups, etc)

It’s a blackboard (possibly a whiteboard) and it’s whoever turns up gets up and sings, plays or speaks.

Come along and check it out.

What’s Your opinion?

Wow, shows you how current my information is! (Still waiting for a call from ABC Marketing but looks like it’s been green-lighted!)

This from another thread:

We have a lot of fun. And biannually, we get together for a big knees up, maybe 700 people – where clubs do skits for the amusement of others. They range from juvenile to a bit adult. There is coarse language and occasional nudity – not for those of a nervous disposition.

Yeah, you’re starting to wander off topic now guys, and when that happens, Happy Bear becomes very unhappy: http://the-riotact.com/?p=10659

Back to the tubs: last night’s roll-up was… full of the usual suspects but so devoid of any others (or anyone who made themselves known) that it was actually quite depressing.

Or could have been. I set my expectations very low for attendance at many things (unless I’m inviting Hashers). And then there was the late notice thing. But good on you Bronwyn, and it was great to meet you. (She’s not an RA poster, but probably a lurker or reader.)

I still went ahead with the video and that will probably hit the interwebz sometime today. Not sure when as it relies on my tch know-how and what time it is in Austin, Texas.

But if this other thing comes off, I will post the details here (and hope that the moderate…… editor sees fit to print this one this time).

If that can’t happen, stay tuned to ABC 666 and Artsound FM for more.

It’s for the festival, it’s for the community, it’s for the fire appeals, it’s for the music.

And the songs.

Well peterh, I’ll give the idea out, because I don’t think anyone is going to steal it anyway. It involved naked, or near naked women with their bodies painted as pussycat faces, breasts being the eyes, navel being the nose and nether region being lips. All done with taste of course, and over the course of the song they would reveal the painted faces (eyes, nose, lips, as the lyrics dictate) while doing a bit of a jig to the music. Probably a bit risque for many audiences, but just fine for the hash house harriers.

And with reference to the previous act that Overheard referred to, that one involved seven sets of naked breasts being bounced around in time to some music, with a curtain arrangement so that only the breasts, and not the owners of them, were revealed. We won first prize for that one, and were asked to put it on for Mardi Gras.

But I’m retired from such silliness now, aren’t I Overheard?

starting to wonder what it is that the hash house harriers actually do??

Hi Granny. It happened with something that looked like support. Will post to the blogspot/Facebook sites eventually (not here).

Granny 6:41 pm 11 Feb 09

Have a great night everyone! Pity I’m in Hobart so I can’t make it! I would donate to hear Ms Cheeky sing!! *chuckle*

No, don’t thank me!!

I’m glad you’re recording the song, Overheard. Can you post it on Facebook or something?

Smiles and hugs,
Granny

Intriguing, Mr O. Heard. I did have another idea for an act, using the song, What’s Up, Pussycat. A quick glance at the lyrics will probably hint at where I was headed with that one. It goes on about ‘pussycat eyes, nose and lips’, in that order. Now that I’ve scarred you again, I’ll go away.

nope. can’t see what she is on about.

Think Elle McFeat’s breast cancer awareness program (can’t remember the name of it — anyone?)

Probably some YouTube vision around though either pixilated or in the sealed section.

Well, tuck that thought away because I’ve just been on the phone with someone from…. no, won’t say too much until I can confirm it but there might be a rather large and public singing opportunity within the next week ahead of the day itself that I will be looking for singers for, so I could maybe use you.

And you. And you. And yes, you too. The one who’s just spilt coffee on your keyboard.

More news as it comes to hand.

(P.S. You have to keep your gear on for this, even though it’s for an unseen audience as well as the crowd.)

Ah, Ms Cheeky. So lucky that what happens on the Hash STAYS on the Hash or I could say many things about your ‘talents’.

But then again, you could probably trump me in return, so, moving on…

So I was in a cafe this morning talking to the proprietor and he had a great idea for the female alternative to Movember. (I declined to participate last year because the year before was so horrific for all around me. I would have taken money to keep shaving but that was outside the rules.)

My friend’s idea was all about women letting their hair grow, though I thought that would be slightly negligible over a month.

I had an alternative idea but will not mention it here for reasons of decorum. Suffice to say, Ms Cheeky, it’s relevant to your ‘talents’ and the Hash. Think Darwin and the Hash Acts there.

Just to clarify something about tonight. IF there are buckets for donations out tonight, that will be MFS and their fund-raising, and I don’t even know if they’re going there. I will be spruiking the ISWYG Day in two weeks (fortnight tomorrow) and all of our fundraising will be done there. PLUS there’s a chance of something this Saturday (in conjunction with another organisation) but more on that when it comes to hand.

peterh 4:00 pm 11 Feb 09

at least you do…

MsCheeky 3:52 pm 11 Feb 09

Hey, I’ll come along and people can donate money for me NOT to sing. If I get started, the bucks for the bushfire appeal will roll in pretty quickly!

As for Sing Everywhere You Go Day, for those of a sensitive disposition, I’ll post my whereabouts that day so you can avoid those areas.

Lucky I’ve got other talents…

Overheard 3:30 pm 11 Feb 09

Yikes, back live again. Thanks for the PR work, Thumper.

Just to let you know that there will be an element of videoacality about tonight, so either a) wear your Wednesday best and brush your teeth ready to yodel, ‘Look mum, I’m the interwebz!’, or b) wear dark glasses, a hoody, and be ready to dive under the tables if the camera (thank you again, Thumper) swings in your direction.

This is the start (or the middle of the start — possibly the start of the middle) of a bushfire-related fund-raiser in conjunction with ISWYG Day on 26 February.

Originally yes, but now other things have come up so, no.

peterh 3:08 pm 11 Feb 09

are you going to be there, thumper?

Thumper 2:50 pm 11 Feb 09

And in further news, Bill Quinn (member of the Canberra Musicians Club and Monaro Folk Society among others) will be reprising a radio performance this morning of a classic Australian song, ‘Time is a Tempest’ (as part of a three-song a capella set).

The author (John Broomhall) has given Bill licence to rewrite the lyrics, using an arrangement by John Thompson of cloudstreet (dot org) to make it an anthem for the bushfire appeals.

To be sung with massed voices and recorded. In fact, John Broomhall wants to record the re-worked version himself!

Come and hear the song BEFORE it’s reworked (well, its latest re-working), and hear how it’s going to tie in with International Sing Wherever You Go Day and the bushfire appeals.

Feel free to add comments or questions.
