Monster cock-up with traffic notices

The AFP has put its hand up to a huge error:

“ACT Policing will review and potentially rescind around 3000 Traffic Offence Reminder Notices issued in error to some road users last week.

The fault was detected today (October 14) after ACTP was alerted by members of the public who had received the incorrect notices.

The error occurred during routine maintenance to ACT Policing’s computerised AUTOCITE system and affects some Canberra road users who had been formally cautioned by police within the past 12-18 months, and not issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice or fine.

All the erroneous Reminder Notices carry a common date of service: October 16, 2008 and were automatically mailed by the Department of Road User Services as a result of the error by ACTP.

ACT Policing is working closely with Road User Services to resolve these specific issues.

ACT Policing apologises for the error and any inconvenience caused, and wishes to advise anyone who received an erroneous Reminder Notice bearing this specific date of service not to take any further action on this matter until further correspondence is received.

Whoops.

But at least they found it themselves one supposes.

Uh, common date 16th October, Uh today’s the 15th, problem detected 14th. Pickedanickname I would love to get a speed camera notice that accused me of speeding tomorrow – hahahahahahahahahah.

Thanks Spectra, it takes a lot of work to be this cynical.

Apparently 3000 notices suddenly appearing in the system just slipped under the radar.

or, the notices are sent out by a external contractor, who gets paid per mail out, and will be able to bill for 3000 extra units. If they had queried it…

LOL and then send 3,000 appologies! Wouldn’t surprise me! There’s our tax dollars going to good use!

p1: Ah, cynicism to put my own to shame. I take my hat off to you, sir. (Also, you’re almost certainly right).

I just got a notice yesterday with that date..but these aren’t speed camera ones are they?

But at least they found it themselves one supposes.

Er…no:

…ACTP was alerted by members of the public who had received the incorrect notices.

Apparently 3000 notices suddenly appearing in the system just slipped under the radar. Makes you wonder how many valid ones they must send out – must be an awful lot of people “forgetting” to pay their fines.

I was particularly interested in the phrase “potentially rescind” being applied specifically to notices that were “issued in error” in the first sentence there. The implication being that they may, alternatively, decide to just let the incorrect notices stand? That seems…not good.
