More crackers from the great comedian - Chief Minister's talkback

Chief Minister’s talkback on 666 is normally a dull collection of whinges getting flat batted back down the pitch.

But Chief Minister Stanhope was back in fine form this morning in his role as the funniest man who ever lived. Alex Sloan also chimed in as straight-person.

Personally I loved his description of the Canberra Capitals as “Canberra’s most successful and significant sporting team”

Then he made clear he’s still in a snit with the Canberra Times by proclaiming “I never miss the City News, first with the news”. CityNews may be much improved in recent times. But “first”? Alex chimed in with “I do read the CityNews, I read it every week”

And then some sneaky caller slipped in that they’d read about the Telstra Deakin downgrade here on RiotACT.

Alex took an audible intake of breathe that the forbidden website had been mentioned by name, but the CM ignored us with the aplomb to which we’ve become accustomed before finishing with a sneaky “I’ve heard about it in the same way you have”.

In any event, which do you regard as “Canberra’s most successful and significant sporting team”?

The Capitals would have to be our most successful.

There is the opinion on the North Coast of NSW that it is only a matter of time before the Raiders franchise ends up there.

True, but it’s a mistaken opinion. The Raiders are one of the most financially stable clubs in the NRL, with a massive revenue base here from their leagues clubs here in Canberra, and have no impetus to move to the North Coast.

Clubs like the Sharks and Rabbitohs are much more likely to end up moving north.

David Campese comes from Queanbeyan. Joe Roff was one of the best wingers around when he was playing. Did Justin Harrison come from Canberra? Noreyaga? Apparently 65 or so pro’s have come from St Eddies and 70 something from Joey’s.

Lauren Jackson et al.

George Gregan, Stephan Larkham, Stirling MortlocK, George Smith, Matt Giteau et al.

Ron Giteau, Glen Lazarus, Gary Belcher, Chica Ferguson, Mal Meninga, Brad Clyde, Dean Lance, David Furner, Jason Croker, Noa Nadruku, Peter Jachson, Ricky Stuart, Steve Walters, Brett Mullins, Allan Tongue and Laurie Daley et al.

It’s the number of the names that add to the significance.

Does anyone think that getting rid of the ACT from the Brumbies might be a precursor to moving the franchise out of Canberra and to Melbourne?

Why did they drop the Canberra andACT from the Brumbies? Are they ashamed to put in the name of the city which has produced I think the second most professional players in the country? Well I know St Eddies has produced the second highest amount of pro’s after St Joeys.

Of all the teams mentioned, the Brumbies are the only ones that play on the international stage (albeit at teh club level) which to me makes them more significant.

Now if we had a category for team most linked to criminal activity and antisocial behavioour, that’d be a lay-down….

My brother’s junior rugby league team didn’t lose a game for 10 years

Beat that Brumbinos, Raiders and Caps

> It’s amazing how much louder 4000 people can be in The Palace compared to 20000 people in Bruce Stadium

I don’t think it ever really was called “The Palace”, was it? I thought that was only what The Cannons called it?

i voted Cannons only because i like basketball and they were really good back in the day. Didnt they win 2 championships?

It’s amazing how much louder 4000 people can be in The Palace compared to 20000 people in Bruce Stadium. My use of old stadium names shows how out of touch I am!

> Null argument. Only three teams to pick from 😉

4, actually. 🙂

& the dropping of ACT from the Brumbies still burns strong in me. I will never, ever forgive them for that & will continue to call them the ACT Brumbies (as most media outlets still do, thankfully).

> And as for crowds, the Brumbies only have 6-7 home games each year, whereas the Raiders have 13.

That’s a null argument….you’re saying that if the Brumbies played twice the number of games that their crowds would be cut in half? I doubt it.

& chewy14…is there 16? Sorry, my mistake. OK then….you can be “middle of the table” & make the finals in NRL then. My point still stands either way.

Look…I don’t mind the Raiders at all….but the fact is that The Brumbies get better crowds, more media interest, are more competitive & have higher representation in the national team.

crowds are consistently bigger at Brumbies games.

Aggregate crowds might not be higher given that the Raiders play twice as many games a year and have been playing for more than double the length of time.

> Geez, harsh Mr bands. They seem to make the finals every year.

8 out of 14 teams make the finals in NRL, it’s hardly difficult…you can be in the bottom half of the table & still make the finals.

There’s only 14 teams in the NRL now?
What happened to the other two?
And as for crowds, the Brumbies only have 6-7 home games each year, whereas the Raiders have 13.

I voted for the Cannons for two reasons.

Firstly, it is probably the most ridiculous choice. Secondly, they were the most significant to me. God I miss them.

The Capitals can never be considered to be “Canberra’s most successful and significant sporting team” simply because they are only a women’s team. Women’s sport will only ever be a sideshow or distraction to the main game.

> Spoken like a true Rah Rah.

Guilty as charged…but it’s no less true because of that. The Raiders have not done much for many, many years…& crowds are consistently bigger at Brumbies games.

I remember reading a front page CT article on the Bushrangers rather ambitious attempt to lure Michael Jordan to their ranks during his fleeting flirtation with professional baseball in ’94. I eventually stopped laughing in or about 2007.

Nah…. Brumbies, Raiders, Capitals. Raiders took no.1 ten years ago or so, but not since The Brumbies came to be.

Spoken like a true Rah Rah.

Nor do the Knights. Alas!

Successful and significant are not the same.

Successful: Capitals Brumbies Raiders

Significant: Raiders Brumbies Capitals.

Sadly the Bushrangers didn’t get a run in the poll.
