More crap IT at the prison

johnboy 31 May 2011 7

The Canberra Times lets us know that two mainframes (really?) have failled at the prison knocking out the electronic security infrastructure on which the facility is based.

Staff sources said two computer mainframes controlling security infrastructure failed about midday on Saturday, creating a security nightmare at the jail.

They said the incident affected all electronic infrastructure, including surveillance cameras, door locks, retina scanning devices and prisoners’ electronic ankle and neck tags.

Another employee said perimeter security was also wiped out, forcing guards to conduct regular patrols on foot of the jail’s border.

Someone’s made a pretty penny selling the ACT Government duff kit and one imagines someone else will make another one fixing it.

Simon Corbell is onto it.

What was the IBM AS400 slogan? “Surprise! – we’re still here!”

“Mainframes – light-years ahead of PDAs”

Although I have my doubts mainframes were used in this instance (wouldn’t be completely unbelievable), mainframes in general are still being sold and used by a lot of departments.

There is a definite stigma around about ‘mainframes’ being old, dust and moth filled boxes of antiquity, but they are still used a lot with critical workloads and large scale applications. They are also finding a niche in large scale virtualisation applications (eg. Linux on Z).

IBM still sell mainframes under the ‘System Z’ banner:

They look just like any other 19″ rack.

I think the media like to use the word “mainframe” to imply size or importance when the reality is more likely it’s a standard server setup. I couldn’t imagine how a mainframe would even be utilised in this fashion, that’s not what they are for.

Simon Corbell is onto it……? Oh, thank God, and here we were getting worried!

WTF……….? This is a major security issue, a critical event for want of another term. Unacceptable. They need to let us know that it’s fixed (is it by the way???), how much to repair it and provide some assurances that this won’t happen again (they probably can’t but worth a try)..

So, Simon…………………..when your ready………………………?
