Roads ACT are warning that they’re undertaking more alarming changes to the lights in the Acton tunnel:

Work to complete the second phase of lighting upgrades in Acton tunnel will be undertaken over the weekends of Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 April 2013, and Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 April 2013, Tony Gill, Director, Roads ACT, announced today.

“There are two types of lighting in Acton tunnel on Parkes Way – fluorescent (white) globes and low pressure sodium (orange) globes,” Mr Gill said.

“In October 2012, work was undertaken to change the fluorescent globes in the tunnel and wash the walls. Work will now be carried out to upgrade the orange globes in the tunnel with 1148 globes to be changed over.

“To enable this work, temporary lane closures will be in place on Parkes Way through the Acton tunnel between 6 am and 7 pm over both weekends. There will be no lane closures on weekdays.

There was a tweet from 666ABC earlier this afternoon that reads “RoadsACT imported orange lights from Belgium for Acton tunnel after the community begged them to retain the orange glow!”

That is BS. Whilst I don’t know where the globes came from, simple fact is RoadsACT were always going to retain the orange lights, so it’s not like the community begged them to do so. The reason they have been out of action is because they had to replace the controller.

That’s the tunnel which has the warning signs at each end (visible in the pic) which have never been turned on.

I’ve seen them on many times. I am going back many many years though.many years.

Does anyone know the last time they were used? Or if they even still work? I don’t recall ever seeing them being used..

Are the orange lights still in there? Maybe they’re secretly going to put them back in?

These lights are meant to be on sensors so different times of the day will have different brightness and colour.

Wont be long before this tunning is much much much longer.

What time was “early openers” today?

I recall some sort of light fitting in the tunnel falling off and hitting a bus after the last lot were changed? If that occurred again I would be alarmed!

I don’t get it. What’s alarming about them replacing the sodium globes?

I get why they are changing the globes, but like you don’t get JB’s line about it being alarming. Makes no sense what so ever. I reckon he must have once written for the Terrorgraph.

That scares me…

Last time there was a change in the bulbs a lot of people carried on like pork chops.

So if no work will occur on weekdays, will the roadworks speed limit signs be removed on weekdays?

What difference would it make? Apparently, roadworks speed limits are optional anyway.

There is a chance that one of the doors to hell that run along the sides of the tunnels could be opened for a period of time.

So that’s where the Fifth Dimension is.

Ha ha ha hahahahahahahahaha….

Surely you know better than that.

I vaguely remember lots of people writing to the Canberra Times and getting upset because they changed the colour of the lights. Unable to find a thread on RA about it. As Johnboy said, over reaction

Changing the lights? Most alarming!
