More green power in the ACT Government.

Shane Rattenbury has word (no media release yet from the Chiefly one’s office) that the ACT Government is going to power itself with more green energy.

ACT Greens Climate Change and Environment spokesperson, Shane Rattenbury MLA, says the increased green energy buy-up announced today is the kind of policy we will see more of with four Greens in the Assembly.

“The announcement made by the ACT Government today will hopefully be one of many this Budget week that lets all Canberrans know that having Greens in the Assembly will lead to a greener and more sustainable ACT.” said Mr Rattenbury today.

“This is just the beginning – the first step along the path to 100% renewable energy use by the ACT Government, as outlined in the ALP-Greens agreement.”

I’d feel happier if it was more locally generated power.

whatsup- you’ll need to check the label- no point trying to hug any tuna tin that’s marked ‘dolphin-friendly’

Where do I go to hug a dolphin in Canberra?

Coles or Woolies have tins of tuna, its the closest you will get around here.

So JohnBoy would like more locally generated power?

I would agree, but many vocal residents in Macarthur and Fadden had other ideas.

Green energy is supposed to be renewable, not what was proposed by Canberra Technology City which if delayed much longer could end up shrinking right up its last chimney.

There is some green energy produced in the ACT. Biogas and when the dams have enough water mini amounts of hydro. And of course that horrendously expensive PV rapidly coming to a roof near you.

The only renewable energy solutions likely to supply 5% to 10% of ACT electricity by 2020 are the proposed solar thermal plant or windmills. Both of which would be more cost effective if built outside the ACT.

All very nice, but is the green power they’re buying actually renewable energy? or is it just slightly ‘less brown’, ie attributed to natural gas-fired turbines, rather than coal? Sounds like another sop to the crystal-dangling dolphin-huggers in the ACT.

sounds great, spend and spend more money, the ACT can afford it, then we can blame the world finnancial crisis when we have no more money.
does the use of green power reduce consumption
