Chief Minister Stanhope has announced things are going to be a bit fiddlier at the Mitchell tip for at least the next three months:
A three-month recycling trial will be conducted at the Mitchell Resource Management Centre to explore new ways of diverting further waste from landfill, Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Jon Stanhope said today.
“Under the trial, when people drop off their waste at the Mitchell Resource Management Centre, they will be asked to drive through a resource recovery yard,” Mr Stanhope said.
“Staff from Thiess, who are contracted to run the facility, will be on-site to help people unload recyclable material into a series of bays. There will be separate bays for everything from mattresses to televisions and computers.
“The self-sort recycling trial will assist in diverting recyclable material from landfill and provide valuable data to assist in designing future contracts. Many transfer stations maximise recycling through a self-sort system of this nature and we want to determine its effectiveness.”
