More of your money going on hotel owners

Andrew Barr has the thrilling news that he’s spending nigh on a million dollars in government money to try and prop up the sacred cows of Canberra’s hotelliers:

This latest marketing activity by Australian Capital Tourism includes a partnership with accommodation and flight booking provider Wotif.com designed to increase awareness and drive visitation to Canberra during the next few months.

The campaign with Wotif.com is in response to a longer than normal Federal Parliament non-sitting period in the lead up to September’s Federal election which provides an additional challenge to the accommodation sector and the wider tourism industry.

The Wotif.com campaign will run during the first two weeks of July in four key visitation markets: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia and will include a competition element.

Tourism’s research indicates that special deals providing added value, coupled with a sense of urgency to book, are key drivers for encouraging people to consider Canberra as a short break destination

Hm. Didn’t the wotif owner recently give the greens one of his spare millions for their election coffers,
or sumthin.

Yes, 1.6 million. And he also bankrolled the Global Mail, and the Guardian’s Australian edition. And he bought and closed a big woodchip mill in Tasmania. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graeme_Wood_%28businessman%29 Just goes to show that not everyone with big money is right wing.

Yes, that’s right. The owner of wotif has been described as “Deep Green” and gave The Greens $1.4million before the last election – by far the biggest political donation in history – allowing The Greens to take out national TV ads and flood letterboxes which enabled them to win two lower house seats and gain the balance of power in The Senate and force thru the carbon tax. I recently had to book a trip up north and I avoided wotif like the plague.

small change for a government that is is propping up the real estate market with a sizeable increase to the first home buyers scheme.
