Just thought I would share that it is now possible to jump on Gungahlin Drive Extension from Mitchell and stay on it till the parks way intersection (give way sign).

I remember from the 5 Januarys in which I lived in Nicholls, just off Curran Drive/Barton Highway, that there was noticeably more traffic each year once we’d reached the back to school dates. So reading of increased traffic on the GDE doesn’t surprise me.

So erm, why wasn’t it made dual carriageway all the way?

Besides that, it was much tougher back in the day when I was renting in Ngunnawal in the late 90s and there was only about two roads out and no friggin shops. So I reckon all Gungahlin residents who have lived there from about 2004 onwards should stop sooking.

Haha.

Still, could be worse, like Jerrabomberra all those people and one road out. What a massive cock up that is!

Went to visit my parents in Gungahlin last night and thought I would try the GDE from Yarralumla. Once bitten, never again, give me Flemington Rd & Northbourne any day.

Let the lemmings trundle down the GDE.

I always leave before 7.30 and it only takes 15 minutes down Northbourne.

Even leaving later some days it isn’t as bad, all the lemmings are travelling down GDE.

The road has now been open for a while – just wondering how other users are feeling about it now.

From my observations, the first three months of GDE was a blessing – cruising along at 80k an hour from the Barton Highway to Glenloch, where the inevitable holdup with the merge occurred.

But the last week with schools back and the road getting the full amount of traffic, its been a 60kmh (or 30kmh if you are stuck behind that f**king tractor that goes on at 7:45 each morning) shuffle.

With a couple of thousand new dwellings in Harrison, Franklin and Forde planned for the very near future, how long will it be until GDE becomes a car park similar to Majura Lane?

From experience, if I leave by 7:15, its brilliant – less than 15 minutes into work in Barton. Leave it later, and it begins to slow down… What’s your experience been?

Getting back on topic, is anyone familiar with the TISM song, “The Mordialloc Road Duplicator”? Perhaps an apt cover for the Canberra crowd would be “The Gunghalin Drive Extension”.
“… happy people stuck in it’s invidious single lane….”

😉

Are you the Walrus?

Glenloch interchange is horrific now

Awesome, thanks for the heads up. Looking forward to seeing how much time this will now save!
