More players wanted for AFL 9's team

Good morning all

I am trying to organise an AFL 9’s team before 28 Janaury. (which is the cutoff for registration). We currently have 5 players, including myself, and are happy to have either a mixed team, or an all-male team. However, if any ladies would like to join, you’ll need to bring two female friends with you, as the competition rules state that mixed teams must have a minimum of 3 female players.

The competition runs for 6 weeks, and is on Wednesday nights, cost is $67. The matches are held at Antill Street in Dickson; http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=Dickson%20District%20Playing%20Fields%2C%20Dickson%20ACT%202602%2C%20Australia&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&sa=N&tab=wl

I should point out that my friends and I are only moderately fit. This is a non-contact sport, and the point is to have some fun and get some exercise, not to impress anyone for next year’s AFL draft 😉

More details can be found here; http://www.afl9s.com.au/common/pages/public/clubfinder.aspx?pID=40864&mode=34&type=3&stateID=8

Please contact me via a post here, and I’ll get back to you ASAP with more info.

Hey Holden

I haven’t looked back at this in six months, and am only doing so now because the next season starts in October.

For the record, while it was a lot of fun, I think we won 2 games and lost 4. Many of the other teams
had blokes who were just waiting for the real footy season to start, and as a result, had skills far sharper than the rest of us.

There’s a guy trying to start up a men’s team for Tuesday nights at Woden now (i.e August 2013).
Or get in touch with AFL Canberra if you’re still keen.

Any chance of some updates on how you’re going?

Chris, please check your personal email.

I’ve been in touch with the guy in charge of the competition, and he is happy for another team to enter – but they need to register quickly, preferably by 5pm tmw Friday 25 January.

Good luck, I have sent you the names of other men who are keen to play too.
I hope between you rmates and these newcomers that there are enough (9) to make up another team.

Hi all

We appear to be set to go….fantastic! 🙂

I’ll get back to you all by email when I have things confirmed.

@ Holden Caulfield, yes I bet it did. Nothing brings out the competitive side of people’s nature than playing sport in front of the opposite gender.

I wonder if it’s because, biologically, it’s as close as we get actually hunting for our dinner these days?

I used to play mixed netball many years, and for a non-contact sport that used to get pretty feisty at times!

@Chop71. Yes, I actually enjoy the contact too, but there is a big difference between playing with some mates on a social level, and playing in various leagues around Australia. Some blokes seem to get white-line fever, and decide that anything in an opposition jumper is the enemy – and therfore anything you can do to them when the ump is not looking is fair game.

That was fine up until Under 14’s, when I stayed short, and many of the other boys were suddenly double my size 🙂

I’m not actually sure how the rules of AFL 9’s works in that respect. I imagine a lot of it is just commonsense; you know, eyes on the ball, no chopping of arms, knees in the back etc…

My 6 foot 3′ 100kg frame would be more suited to body contact. (although my age isn’t)
After watching the video I thought there is absolutely no way I could pull out of one of those marking contests without making contact to the other person.

Many years of playing has the contact drilled into me and I enjoy the hits that go with footy. I think I would leave a few unsuspecting souls flat on their backs and that isn’t fair.

They would need red cards if I signed up.

Kicking I can do. It’s the running around for extended periods I struggle with these days, which is why it could have been fun.

Good luck.

@Holden Caulfield. A shame you have tennis, sounds like you’d at least know how to kick the ball!

Never mind, maybe next year 🙂

Ahh, scrap that. I’ll be playing tennis on Wednesday nights when my class starts back again in mid-Feb.

If it was any other night!

Damn.

Yep, I could be in too if you need the numbers. Haven’t played competitively for almost 25 years, but I did captain my school U16s back in the day, haha.

@mcs; Hi Matt, you’d be very welcome as well. As mentioned in a previous post, just send me an email and I’ll reply to it tonight 🙂

How cool is RA!!! (as if I didn’t know, but it’s nice to have these things proven from time to time).

By the looks of things, only one further player is needed for us to reach the magic number of 9 players. Come on Canberra, you can do it! 😀

Yep i’m interested as well – as with canburnian I reckon I could just about last out the 6 weeks 🙂 Cheers Matt

I’m interested as well – as with canburnian I reckon I could manage to last 6 weeks ok! Cheers Matt

@Chop71 – I agree with you, up to a point.

However, I’m fairly slightly built, and have grown tired of the joys of being creamed often when I went near the ball, and the injuries that went with it.

At least this allows those of us not built like Sherman tanks to enjoy a version of Aussie Rules 🙂

AFL without contact? may as well call it netball

Hello guys

Thank you for your quick responses, you’d both be very welcome 🙂

@Holden Caulfield – at present, the five players are all public servants of varying levels of fitness. 2 of these blokes are 6 foot tall or so, the rest of us a little bit shorter. Ages range from mid-20’s through to late 30’s.

I’d suggest only 2 of us have ever actually played Aussie Rules of any type before – in my case I played with the Osaka Dingoes some years ago. So, we are not likely to break any scoring records, but all of us are keen to have a go – and for 6 weeks, it’s enough time to have some fun! Besides, I cannot imagine the other teams necessarily being in much better shape than what we are :D…but I could be wrong…

Email me at sognal@hotmail.com, and I’ll send you more details tonight.

Tell us more about the existing five players, ages etc (if you don’t mind).

Id be keen to get involved with this 6 weeks seems about as much as my legs could handle.
