More Police on local streets.

The highly coloured ABC Canberra site is reporting that with a new roster being introduced there will be more ACT Police out on the streets at peak times, trying to keep the bad people at bay.

Will it actually make much of a difference to the crime rate in Canberra, or is this just more window dressing from the ACT Government?

Time will tell.

or bicycles, maelinar. which are greener?

horses emit ghg’s (methane) and the production & transport of their feed, and energy required in production of shoes, gear etc, prob’ly outweighs that of a cycle.

but the mounties always get their man, so would be great so long as the gender balance of criminals remains tilted so significantly towards blokes!

Horses are the greenest form of motorbike. Get on the climate change bandwagon and bring back the mounted constabulary.

The new Police bikes were replacing the old ones. So no, there are not more Police motorbikes on the street. They are out and about around 75% of the time but are often caught up in ceremonial tasks like escorting foreign dignitaries motorcades around town. There would only be about 6 bikes out covering all of Canberra at any point in time so unlikely you will see them on a regular basis.

There has been about 60 new recruits added to the force in 2008 and thats ontop of around 120 that graduated in 2007 so the numbers are getting healthier that I can assure you.

New roster puts more Police on the streets in the busier periods which is a good thing and should have a more visible presence to the public. Having enough working Police vehicles to go around can be a problem though.

If they put a comunity cop in Lanyon (Charnwood of Tuggeranong) there’d either be even more reported crime or more police manhours to reduce crime.

Either way, ACT Govt doesn’t want to hear it.

Do those extra motorcycle police get tied up escorting the PM’s motorcade around, or do special duty police do that?

Want to drop the crime rate in Canberra significantly ?

C.o.m.m.u.n.i.t.y C.o.p l.o.c.a.t.e.d i.n. K.i.p.p.a.x.

They could probably serve well to reopen on a more permanent basis that one they used to run in Garema Place as well – the one near where Sammy’s used to be.

And presumably, wherever the bogan congregation is most intense southside.

It’s nothing about keeping the bad people at bay, it’s all about meeting the publics expectations of response times. Now if the Courts would follow suit and meet public expetations it would be all good.

Apparently 18 new graduates were inducted last week.

I’ve seen a noticeable increase in the police presence around Tuggeranong.

This new top cop seems to have twigged to the fact that the community was rather peeved about the way the cops were going about their business and implemented some positive changes. Nowadays people are talking about seeing cops out and about and they actually say “g’day” as well. Let’s hope they keep it going for the good of the community.

well there aren’t really any more police on canberra’s streets, there’s the same amount with slightly different rosters. another bullshit stop gap measure to take the heat off stanhopeless.

Out of curiosity, does anyone actually know what Canberra’s crime rate is?

I remember last year there was a big media splash about the purchase of 8 new Police motorbikes, complete with all the gear. I travel Kambah to Civic in peak hour most days, and I’ve seen a Police bike once since then. What DO they do with their days?

.

I’ve seen them two nights in a row strolling around Charnwood shops and environs being generally pleasant and watchful. Two thumbs up.

How many cynics are going to point out that this is an election year? With all the road resurfacing going on you could be forgiven for thinking it.

Perhaps our constant baying that Police numbers seem (negatively) out of kilter with the rest of Aust has sunk in.

Sure, they havn’t increased the Police numbers, but by jiggling the rosters, at least we may be mollified by seeing them a bit more often when we are likely to notice.

If our toy council did things properly, rather than concentrating on spin, we would all be better off.

Sonic. You have ripped us off to fill your coffers. Spend it where we need it. Cops and nurses would be a good start.
