The National Capital Authority is giving notice that they’re putting traffic lights on the intersection of Blamey Crescent and Anzac Parade:

The National Capital Authority will commence roadwork at the intersection of Anzac Parade, Blamey Crescent and Currong Street this Monday in preparation for the installation of traffic signals.

Some disruption to traffic is anticipated, with speeds reduced to 40km/hr in the area while work is undertaken. Temporary lane closures will occur for short periods.

“The NCA asks all road users to please be patient while this necessary work is completed, and to drive in accordance with the speed restrictions,’ said NCA Chief Executive, Gary Rake.

The traffic signals are being installed to improve the safety of the intersection. The phased signals will generally replicate the function of the nearby existing Anzac Parade and Constitution Avenue intersection traffic signals.

I agree – get rid of those hedges altogether. it is far easier to cross Anzac Pde with them gone – you can see if anything is coming without edging out into Anzac pde.

People also seem to be confused as to who has right of way – the car going straight across, of the car that is already in the middle, but turning across traffic.

Shutting off Blamey Cres would be ridiculous – it is the main st of Campbell and provides access from civic to schools, preschools, daycare and shops. And a whole suburb.

I attended an NCA presenation on this issue. The main reason lights are going in at this intersection is due to the number of accidents and related fatalities which occur at this intersection. (not necessarily at peak times) It is not about stopping rat runners or flow control.

I personally believe they could accomplish the same goal by keeping the hedges in the middle of Anzac Parade trimmed to a level which maintains good visibility. (or almost non existent as they are now 🙂 )

Sweet jesus troll-sniffer, you’ve outdone yourself. Traffic lights as a mechanism to control the people?

Hang on a second – the proposed lights at the top of Anzac Parade didn’t go ahead but were put off to the sides because of an outcry from War Memorial stakeholders. How come it is suddenly OK to have lights half-way up? This will wreck the parade for anyone looking up the vista, particularly at night-time.

If people want Anzac Parade to be a vista, perhaps they should make a case for it to be blocked to traffic completely and permanently.

Of course, in enlightened countries, countries that credit their citizens with just a little common sense and maturity, traffic lights at intersections such as this would only be on during periods when needed, ie from 8am to 10am and 3pm to 6pm or at most from 7.30am right through to 6pm. The rest of the time enlightened administrations that treat their citizens with a modicum of dignity would have the intersection revert to a stop sign arrangement, just as over half Canberra’s invasive and often pointless traffic lights should.

Perhaps if the …. “speed restrictions” you refer to, were a little more consistent, with ONE sign or THE SAME speed limit (not 2 different speed signs close together). You can’t expect patience if the “speed restrictions” slow everyone down to a crawl and confine everyone to single lanes.

But that would go against the ultimate nanny-state hand-holding intrusive and over-controlling mantra of present day administrations, as well as requiring flexibility of thought and a desire to actually serve the public rather than just control it.

I think it makes more sense to just block those side streets off

It would certainly help decrease the pervasive rat-running through Reid during peak hour.
