More work to try and make Belco beautiful

Mr Stanhope has announced more lipstick for the pig that is Belconnen.

In particular he’s going to try and beautify the stagnant water grave of shopping trolleys to the west of the Belconnen Arts Centre.

As part of the work, the shoreline of the Inlet at Casuarina Park will be reshaped to improve the circulation and quality of the lake water whilst retaining a large number of existing trees.

A new broad and curved lake wall will be constructed to enlarge the area. Behind this wall a grassy bank will transition gently from the water to Emu Bank and the Belconnen Arts Centre to improve access to the foreshore.

The area will be irrigated with lake water and 44 new trees will be planted.

Mr Stanhope said the project was part of a series of ACT Government investments that were transforming the Lake Ginninderra foreshore.

“In addition to the Belconnen Arts Centre, which opened at the foreshore last year, plans are under way for a state-of-the art skate park near the Eastern Valley Way Inlet, a teenage play area at the Western Foreshore District Park and new lighting for the Lake Ginninderra community path.”

Money well spent?

Walked past recently, still no public access yet absolutely nothing’s been done!

More work to try and make Belco beautiful

that should be ‘More work to try and to Belco beautiful’..?

[/grammar nazi] (ie, no comment on he’s going to try and beautify…)

Its all well and good to spend money improving the appeal of a public park, but I think an overhaul of Casuarina Park will do little (if anything) to resolve the lack of usage. The main problem is that there’s only a small handful of retail/office buildings that have easy access because some twirp approved the construction of a multi-storey carpark on the adjacent block in the early 70’s. The entire stretch of land on the eastern side of that carpark needs to be developed into a retail/commercial/office space to introduce pedestrian traffic.

The entire foreshore development along Emu Bank has been an epic failure since inception.

There’s a lot of spin here. There’s no need to improve access, for example; access is fine. And this media release is dated 17 Sept, when the area has signs on the fencing around it saying there’s no access from 13 Sept (walked past it last night on way home from Checkers- not sure when the access was actually restricted).

The idea of making this corner of the lake curved is a good idea as far as I’m aware, in that currently the crap floating on the water surface gets caught in the corners etc.

The proposal actually hit the Canberra Times months ago, if I remember correctly.

Money spent on Belconnon is never money well spent.
