Motorbike / monkeybike menace

This complaint probably won’t go down well with legitimate trail/dirt bike riders, but I am sick to death of the “kids” who ride these aforementioned “unregistered toys”, and who think they have the right to use the fire trail (and nature reserve) adjacent to my home as a race track.

They disturb the wildlife, not to mention the peace and tranquility, of the area. I can’t have my windows open because of the dust that they stir up. Fences to the reserve are continually being cut so these inconsiderate “people” (what I really would like to call them is unprintable) can access the reserve.

Complaints to Park Rangers and Police have gone unheeded. What else can I do????

Can anyone advise on the laws in the ACT?
I spoke with RTA NSW who stated that 49cc or less vehicles require no registration, and can use footpaths and bicycle paths but not public roads.

Is it a similar rule in the ACT?

Illegal to ride motorbikes of any size on foot/bikepaths. An ex-work collegue got an unregistered/no third party fine for riding one of those pocket bikes on a path.

I hope your trolling. You have just openly admitted that your okay with committing MURDER and it may be of a total stranger.

If you are not trolling, you are a complete idiot.

Trace the bike back to the house it lives at, take photos of bike doing something illegal. Then, when no one cares, sneak into there shed and fill the tank with sugar.

Note: Sugar in the tank does absolutely nothing. It’s a common myth. Putting an axe through their petrol tank is markedly more effective in disabling a vehicle and getting the message across in a virtually unmistakeable way.

Geez, what’s wrong with topping up the tank with water? And add a couple of liters to any half full fuel cans nearby. It’ll take them ages to work out what the problem is.

I know someone who was legally riding on a street and had this done to him, he had to have 2 or 3 surgeries to fix the damage caused. Also, you’ve got a chance of affecting runners or cyclists, neither of which are causing issues.

That has to be wrong, have you got any written evidence? Someone over the age of 16 can’t ride a bicycle on the footpath, let alone a having a petrol motor.

The 200w limit for pedal assisted bicycles is nothing. Most electric mopeds that old people ride around in are illegal.

Certainly powered bicycles in the ACT can’t output more than 200w (which is absurdly low).

Except for the 1000w electric bicycle that I’ve personally witnessed being ridden at quite a jaunty rate of knots… 🙂

I find this really interesting. My understanding was that any motor vehicle with an output of more than 200w had to be road registered and passed whatever relevant design standards (unless you use it privately of course). Certainly powered bicycles in the ACT can’t output more than 200w (which is absurdly low).

harvyk1 you are a dead set deads***.

It also needs a power rating of under 500W or something like that. Basically anything with a petrol motor is well above the allowed power level and doesn’t qualify for that rule.

Firetrails are not footpaths or bike paths, and they are certainly not public roads. That does not mean that you can run your motorbikes on them. Motorbikes are explicitly excluded from Canberra Nature Parks (which provide most of the green space in Canberra). The fact that you have to cut through fences to ride your bikes should tip you off to the fact that you’re not allowed there, shouldn’t it?

You still have the option of finding someone who privately owns some bushland and asking them for permission to ride your bike on their land.

I doubt they are riding something 49cc or less. More likely on at least a 100cc bike.

Nah, illegal and messy. Why not just re-enact Mad Max and turn your Mazda 121 (I assume that is what you drive) into a mini MFP Intercepter. You and the monkey bikers should work perfectly together as a scaled down versions of Max and the nightrider gang.

Determine where your priorities are by considering escalating the situation to a physical confrontation.

If you don’t do it, nobody will take notice of you.
If you don’t want to do it, then you don’t feel that badly about it.

Once you’ve decided upon the repercussions of each, you’ll have a better idea of how much this means to you.

This makes most people realise that it’s not that important and they can get on with their life.

The few that decide it’s worth it, sort shit out.

Keep a record of when it occurs. Keep a record of descriptions of the bikes and the riders if you can see. Keep a record of any property damaged such as fences. Submit this to the police and they can use it to intercept the riders or at least judge how bad the issue is so they can take other measures.
