The Australian Capital Territory Motorcycle Riders Association (MRA ACT) annual Blanket Run to support the work of the Salvation Army was held on Saturday 12 May 2012.

This is a very special event involving about 400 motorcyclists and supporters getting together to raise funds, and donate blankets to help out those doing it tough this Winter.

For those of you who enjoy shiny things and speeches by pollies, here’s a slideshow and video of the day.

Too bad it was moved from the city walk area. Just didn’t have the same vibe out at the Carillon.

I agree. It was a lovely spot that worked out well but riding in to Garema place and making the speeches there certainly would have more impact as far as helping the Salvos and raising awareness about homelessness. It’s interesting that people do nothing but bitch and moan about how boring Canberra can be but when you try to do something lively and interesting it gets shot down.

The MRA were stating that the event had outgrown the space. I suspect that it had more to do with the preferences of the Police hiding under the banner of ‘safety’. That ride has been running for 31 years now and I’ve never heard of any ‘safety’ issues before. If it is indeed and issue with the Police then lets start talking to our MLAs now about next year. I’d be willing to bet that the shop owners who missed out on 400 extra customers on the day might have something to say about it as well.

The Salvos deserve all the attention and assistance they can get. After all, their ultimate goal is simple to help people keep warm and fed. If bureaucracy is the issue here then lets put as much pressure on as is necessary to reinstate the event at Garema Place. Otherwise you can kiss the next Toy Run goodbye as well. God help the coper that gets Santa angry.
