ACT Policing have caught a motorcyclist travelling 174 kilometres per hour in a 100km/h speed zone on Majura Parkway last Friday.

The rider was apprehended on the Monaro Highway, Symonston. The motorcyclist excuse for the speed was “my fuel light had come on and I was trying to make it to the service station at Hume.”

Police subsequently issued the rider a traffic infringement notice, which incurred a $1,841 fine, a loss of twelve demerit points and by default their licence.

The officer in charge of traffic operations, Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman, said that a person that exceeds the speed limit by 74 kilometres should not have a licence.

“What do you say to a person who thinks it’s ok to exceed the speed limit by 74km/h? A person that exceeds the speed limit by 74km/h just shouldn’t have a licence. It’s a simple as that.”

ACT Policing would like to remind all motorcyclists and motorists to obey the speed limits.

“The rider was not only gambling with their own life, but with the lives of other road users.”

So here’s the thing. I regularly drive cars on highways – mainly Canberra to Sydney and Canberra to the coast. Over forty years driving I’ve had no accidents and no tickets. I always drive at the speed limit and find that I arrive relaxed and, thankfully so far, in one piece. I see plenty of motorbikes on the road. They appear in my rear view mirror, then they’re right behind me, then they’re gone from sight! Often overtaking dangerously, and seemingly oblivious to any speed limit. Sometimes there are five or ten or more all in a group. They seem to think that they have this divine right to go racing past anything on the road, no matter how fast others might be going.

Now, I’m sure that there are some that plod along at the speed limit. These would be the bikers that you don’t see on the road as they’re going the same speed as the bulk of the traffic. But I suspect they would be in the minority.

So why would anyone be surprised that a biker was caught doing 74 kph over the speed limit. Especially the police. Surely they know that most bikers are unable to manage their speed. And motorists are advised in TV adverts to be ‘bike aware”. Give me a break!
