Mount Ainslie bomb disposal not going to plan

Back in November we were all a little surprised when a section of the Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve was closed off to search for unexploded ordnance.

Today Territory And Municipal Services are warning they’ve had to extend the closure to the end of January:

A section of Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve between Mount Ainslie Drive and Campbell Park Offices off Northcott Drive will remain closed until Tuesday 31 January 2012.

The closure was put in place on Thursday 17 November 2011 while a detailed survey of the area was undertaken for unexploded ordnance (military ammunition which has been fired, but failed to explode).

The survey was undertaken by a contractor engaged by the National Unexploded Ordnance Office. The survey uncovered the waste remnants of six mortars. No further unexploded ordnance was found.

Defence has recommended that a small area of the reserve be further surveyed for items which may be buried. The ACT Government is currently considering this recommendation and it is possible that a further survey will be undertaken in the near future. The extended closure will allow this to quickly take place.

I’m wondering why they didn’t put the new ASIO HQ somewhere around here. Instead we’ve got this monster spy agency on a prime site close to the city overlooking Parkes Way and the lake.

To make it worse i think that the majority of what was found were inert blue training rounds which can be found all over Canberra.

“The survey uncovered the waste remnants of six mortars. No further unexploded ordnance was found.”

What a load of crap. Who writes this rubbish?

“The remains of six *exploded* mortar rounds were found. No *unexploded* ordnance was found”.
