Air Traffic Management has a piece on works to upgrade the landmark radar on top of Mount Majura:

Airservices Australia has commissioned into service a transportable terminal area radar (TAR) at Sandra’s View, near Hume, ACT, to provide air traffic surveillance while a permanent radar at Mt. Majura is upgraded.

The $5.5 million Mt. Majura TAR upgrade is part of a $90 million nationwide infrastructure modernisation program being carried out by Airservices to ensure the safe and efficient movement of air traffic in Australian airspace.

The commissioning of the temporary radar clears the way for upgrade works at Mt. Majura to commence on schedule on 31 October, with the upgrade expected to be completed by May 2012.

I just noticed it was operational this week. The funny thing is they’ve put it right in the space where they used to have a back-up radar built. They kept it there for years in reserve then all of a sudden removed it. Can’t help but wonder whether or not it would have cost less to keep it instead of putting in a temp one, and why remove a back up in case the Mt Majura one ever goes down unexpectedly.
