Simon Corbell has announced changes to the locations of fire and ambulance stations around Canberra:

“This strategy has been developed in close consultation with the Transport Workers Union (TWU) who represent intensive care paramedics, and the United Firefighters Union (UFU) who advocate for ACT Fire Brigade officers to ensure the needs of frontline personnel have been met.

“The Government is committed to ensuring the city grows to maintain appropriate ambulance and fire cover for all Canberra suburbs, and that is why the Government decided to commission this strategy and has decided to move to the implementation stage.”

The project has been prioritised into four implementation phases. The first phase will deliver service improvements to:

— South Tuggeranong – A stand alone fire station is proposed for the site in South Tuggeranong at the southeast roundabout intersection of Tharwa Drive (south) and Tharwa Drive (east) at the intersection with Drakeford Drive. The current fire station in Greenway located in the Tuggeranong Town Centre on the corner of Scollay Street and Reed Street (south) will be converted, as part of phase 2, to become a station for the ambulance service (relocated from the current Kambah ACTAS station).

— North West Belconnen – The proposed site for Charnwood is near the south west corner of Lhotsky Street and Tillyard Drive abutting Ginninderra Drive. The site will accommodate a new ambulance station and the relocation of the existing fire station in Charnwood. The existing Charnwood fire station is considered obsolete and is not suitable for refurbishment; and

— Belconnen – The proposed site for Aranda is on the border of Macquarie and Aranda, on Bindubi Street
close to the south east intersection with Belconnen Way. The Belconnen ambulance and fire stations located on Lathlain Street are to be relocated to Aranda to improve operational response. Aranda would be a co-located ambulance and fire station.

Now, why am I not surprised that, apparently there is not a fire rescue station planned for Weston Creek, let alone an ambulance station, given the aging W.C. population?

How far do you think the Kambah fire and rescue station is from Weston Creek.. you know, the one on Namatjira Drive, which feeds directly to Cooleman Court? According to google maps, it is 4.4km to Cooleman Court and 6.7km from the fire station to the furthest point in Weston Creek.

Compare this to the new service being opened in South Tuggeranong, where for example the distance from Chisholm Fire Station to Banks is over 12km.

Wanda – unfortunately the people governing us never have been big on history, geography or common sense. And let’s not even mention project management and traffic planning

They are, however, quite good at counting money from developer donations and land sales.

Hiding behind lame tweets and press releases is another skill they’ve mastered. They got to Government 2.0 without quite grasping Government 101 first

AArrrrgghhhhh !!!! It appears Weston Creek doesnt exist to Simon Corbell or ACT government as there is not even a public toilet supplied by government!!!

( Wake up, you whinging Gungahlinese, as outspoken greed and poor governance ensures the rest of Molongolo does without !)

Now, why am I not surprised that, apparently there is not a fire rescue station planned for Weston Creek, let alone an ambulance station, given the aging W.C. population? Obviously this Labor Government (and Simon Corbell) have forgotten a lot of things, like many thousands of Weston Creek residents? Of course, nothing ever happens in Weston Creek, 2003 fires must be a figment of my imagination, just as my muddled brain must have imagined that all roads out of Weston Creek were blocked by raging fires. Bushfire paths tend to be cyclical, as I found when living in Blue Mountains and West Killara. Natural disasters are part of life, but does over-politicised incompetent government have to be, too??

Hmm I remember the government getting criticised heavily only a couple of years ago about response times from the current locations, with the government replying by shooting the messenger and rubbishing the results. Is this now an attempt to take credit for the idea of moving the stations?

Or, more on topic, how about giving the firies a payrise.. are they still paid less than bus drivers?

I think trainees are paid about 60k, senior fire fighters are paid about 75k, station officers about 85k. Then there’s the 2nd and 3rd incomes so many of them have.

Bus drivers receive 20.16/hr in training 25.82/hr in probation (6month) and 28.75/hr after training.
Fireys receive 11.15/hr in training, 11.29/hr in probation (5yr), 12.94/hr after training

Maybe the fireys should be going on strike as much as the bus drivers do?

Really? Isn’t the minimum wage $15.51?

Leave Things As They Are,If You Want To Spend Some More Of Our Money,Give The Front Line Troops A Pay Rise!!

krats, how about giving those on minimum wage a payrise first? No offence to the troops, but our soldiers are hardly on the povery line like those on minimum wage are.

By “TROOPS” I Was Referring To Ambo’s And Firies.Bad Choice Of Words On My Part.

Well the ambos got a 20%+ pay raise earlier this year, will that do for a start? Also, how do you expect to be taken seriously when you punctuate like a 1990’s 14 year old?

I wonder how there will go about decommissioning Belco. The site would be worth a motza, but the tower there is a pretty awesome bit of training infrastructure, and not cheap to replace.

They’ve already replaced it with a brand new tower at ESA training in Hume.

yay for the new stations, although I hope the old ones are not left to rot. Please save some money in the budget to fix them up or demolish them. No-one wants old boarded up unused amenities.

They’re way ahead of you! The tower’s already been moved to the new training thingy at Hume (next to AMC and the Southcare base)

A fire sale, you say?

Adding a fire station at the intersection of Tharwa and Drakeford Drives, makes a lot of sense. By moving the ambulance service from Kambah to Tuggeranong, how will that affect the ambulance service in Calwell on Johnson Drive? Maybe the ambulance service in Calwell could move into a joint facility with the fire station on Tharwa Drive, which would reduce costs, while providing better centralised services.

I reckon the moving of the Belconnen services will enable the sale of the current block that has the police station and former remand center. Kaching$$ Baby
