Mowing down Liberals in the streets

This statement just in from the Liberal Party

Liberal Party Campaign incident statement

The ACT election day has been marred by an alleged assault outside a polling booth in Stirling.

At 9:30am this morning a white Subaru car mounted the curb outside Stirling College and ran down a sign for Liberal MLA Steve Doszpot. The driver then sped up and drove directly at a table where a disabled female volunteer was sitting, forcing the person to leap back and run to avoid being hit.

Thinking that they would be hit by the car, the volunteer was forced to run on a painful leg that they have not used for a month, before the car swerved at the last moment.

The woman driving the car then pulled up near the table and yelled abuse at the volunteer.

Although formal complaints have been lodged with the police by witnesses and by the volunteer targeted by the vehicle, the AFP told the victim of the incident that they would not take a statement until Monday or Tuesday.

The ACT Liberals have also formally reported the incident to the police and have asked that charges be pressed. They have passed on licence details and a description of the woman driving the car, who represented herself to be a lawyer.

An ACT Liberal Campaign Spokesperson said “Australian elections are dependent on volunteers who sacrifice their own time and resources. They are entitled to be treated with decency and respect.”

“I ask that the other party leaders ask their members and supporters to show greater restraint and report to police any knowledge they have of this unacceptable behaviour.”

Sounds like bullshit.

Sounds like bullshit. Either that, or they are only telling a very small part of the story.

Have to agree, anytime i have run someone down they have had their version as to why i did it.

Agreed – Tooks obviously is the voice of reason here – there could be any number of perfectly good reasons why somebody might use their car to try to run down an old biddy sitting at a card table on the footpath.
Presumably the police are right now sitting around the meeting room considering their options with regards to what charges they can lay on the old biddy for wasting police time by lodging complaints about being assaulted with a motor vehicle. Over donuts.

If this actually happened then i think that it is a spat between 2 women and not political……or it is completly political and it is some sort or Bourne identity-like incident where that one volunteer who nearly got run down held they key or vital such and such to the election and therefore had to be eliminated in a most vehicular fashion.

I believe that the whole story sounds like the engine of the car involved: wank wank wank wank wank

If you threaten someone with a gun, you have your guns taken away. If you threaten someone with a car, what happens? Very little I suspect, perhaps a “Caution”?
It doesn’t matter whether the volunteer was or wasn’t meant to be there (as some ACTION drivers found a few years ago after pushing illegally stopped cars out of bus zones).

There have been instances where fire trucks have literally sideswiped and nudged numerous vehicles in narrow streets in order to get to the blaze.Mind you if i was driving a bus and some inconsiderate arseholes blocked the road i would be tempted to bulldoze them out of the way as well!

And there was even less of it during the postal vote I did from my house a couple of weeks ago. Also no lining up. Could definitely get used to that!

Now if only we could vote via the interwebs…

I don’t understand why we can’t use the internet to vote. You can check your electoral roll listing on line if you provide sufficient details. You can even change your address on line. Given that people don’t have to provide ID when they turn up to vote, an on line voting facility that required you to provide more details, than required at the local polling booth, including full name, date of birth and full address would be more secure. They might even be able to develop a better on line program for voting than exists at the electronic booths.

I think this would be a lot more likely to result in higher levels of voter fraud.

At least if someone has to go to the polling booth in person, it makes it much less likely that it can be manipulated on a large scale.

I hate voting. Running the gauntlet of people waving their papers in your face to try and entice you to vote for them. It pisses me off no end.

There was none of that at the pre-polling booth. I could get used to it.

Probably the biggest swing the Liberals have had towards them in Weston for a long time! Sadly, I’m sure that the vote will be classed as an informal, as there is no Ms Subaru White listed as a registered voter in the ACT.

Consider living in a place where they wave guns in your face when you attempt to vote. This will make you feel much better about the way things are here.

I take it you’re referring to Southwestern Sydney? Having grown up there, I concur.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it was someone seriously ticked off at someone else they believed was breaking the “must be 100 metres away from a designated polling place”.

A Steve Pratt fan still upset about the 2008 result?

Since when was Stirling in Tuggeranong? Or are you suggesting that there is not a single bogan residing in Weston Creek, and therefore, ipso facto, they must’ve travelled from Tuggeranong?

Twas a Tuggers bogan lost their way and ended up in Stirling, thought the table was a drive thru polling booth but got confused after hitting that pole with a sign on it. Then they got the accelerator instead of the brake, by that stage it was too late to order a sausage and egg muffin as they’d missed the window, so drove off to get a coffee at a reputable shop down the street.
The bit about being a lawyer and such was just a bit o cheek cause they were still DUI!

Sure it wasn’t a Motorist having a Party?

The Labor driver swerving off road towards the Liberal volunteer must be something to do with ‘big swing to the Liberals’.

As mentioned in posts above… is there any evidence of this?

Pretty outrageous behaviour, I hope the volunteer is ok.

Why did the Libs comment that other party’s have to show respect at polling booths, what was said by the driver that would indicate it was politically motivated? If anything this sounds like a Tuggeranong bogan who had too many the night before and nearly took out someone in the process of ticking a box and getting another slab.

From my experience, after drinking a slab I have trouble putting number 1 in a box.

That was beautiful. 10/10

When I was campaigning in ’08 I had an angry young man threaten to wrap a chain around my head if I didn’t fuck off from ‘his’ shopping centre. (He was holding it in his hand at the time). Helper got his rego number and about a week later he received a caution from ACT Police which I suppose saved some magistrate the trouble of issuing one. I didn’t want to run a poor-bugger-me campaign because we were running on policy no the actions of idiots. I suspect this shit happens a lot more than we realise but doesn’t get reported so much in the mainstream press. I chuckled reading about the Caretaker Chief minister’s car being followed. ‘Katie’s brush with death!!!’

Canberra Times got the story up at 4.02: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/libs-volunteer-says-car-almost-ran-her-down-20121020-27xx8.html

So what?

More people died in the ACT Health system getting Katy re-elected than will die from vehicular homicide on election day.

Those were my first thoughts too. Why would the Libs all but blame another political party for this? Where`s the evidence that it was another party? Seems like a cheap shot from a party that`s desperate. I hope the poor volunteer is not too shaken or hurt.

A Tuggeranong bogan lawyer attempting vehicular assault… you can’t make this stuff up.
