MP vows to protect election tally room

By Thumper - 1 July 2008 13

ABC online has this story saying that Federal politicians have vowed to protect Canberra’s election tally room, despite the Electoral Commission revealing it is too expensive and no longer needed.

Good on them. The Tally Room is a national institution and should remain.

What’s Your opinion?

Just put Kerry O’Brien and Antony Green in a sound proof booth next election, haha.

That was a classic this last election, the commercial stations doing the usual mindless crowd-pleasing antics and makign a racket, to the utter disgust of O’Brien and Green. Some *very* rude comments were made by both of them. Antony Green’s big night, he only gets to do this once every 4 years, and it was ROONED.

Actually, from what I saw when I was there the commercials had nothing to do with the racket. It was simply euphoric screams any time the ABC graphics went on screen on the monitor behind their set and the Red bar was ahead of the Blue bar. Oh, and the seat of Bennelong also created a bit of ruckus whenever that was out on screen too. See links to a couple of images below.

(Can someone please teach me how to post images in the comments section.)

Get rid of it. It’s a free television studio. If they want it, they can pay for it.

I love how a senior beaurocrat who is paid to give his professional advice to government admits spending on something that’s a waste of money, yet all the MPs want to keep it. Because it’s their time in the spotlight. Imagine if it was revealed the CSIRO was spending a million dollars on something they didn’t need. Or schools, or hospitals.

Axe it. If broadcast media want it, broadcast media can pay for it.

I second that motion.

Isn’t the Tally Room just one of the vacant halls at EPIC? Don’t they just hire all the gear they need and cram it into B Pavilion (the Budawang building)?

Its an event that costs $1million to put on, gives the people involved a bit of a buzz to watch news as it develops, and is free airtime to broadcast media.
It has an online website that they derive all of their information from, that costs only a few hundred thousand to develop, and costs next to nothing to run.

Tally Room = National Institution = Heritage Listed HUH ?

I just don’t see the significance of it…. its just a room that has been used for many things and occasionally has been used for elections. As a operational concept its good (the illusion of transparency) but does the physical room matter ?

can’t they classify it as an area of national importance? heritage list it and wrap it in plastic?

The spelling is ‘quiet’ I do believe 😉

Nah, I posted them early this morning, they just took all day to get up.

I understand that the tally room nowdays has bugger all to do with the counting of votes, but I still feel that its a part of the transparent nature of our political system. Keeping it helps maintain that transparency – or at least the illusion of it.

Quite day today Thunper?

We should keep it for sure. It’s great that we can count on it each election year!
