ABC Online is reporting that Mr. Stanhope has given up his plans for a memorial to the SIEV-X.

Mr Stanhope says the memorial is more appropriate as a national, not a local, project.

“One could argue if the Commonwealth is not prepared to support a SIEV-X memorial, that one would I think not necessarily look to the ACT as a location for such a memorial,” he said.

So what exactly was that all about?

Isn’t Steve Biddulph the guy who wrote books about bringing up boys in a SNAG kind of way?

Not too bizarre IMHO, art is art, and a lot of the more than 200 entries will be of better quality than the entire genre ‘modern art’.

It should be good.

Somewhat bizarrely, although the memorial i sno longer going ahead, there will still be an exhibition of all the designs for it to be opened by the man of the hour himself.

SIEV X NATIONAL MEMORIAL PROJECT EXHIBITION

ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Arts Jon Stanhope will open an exhibition of designs for the Siev X National Memorial Project on Wednesday.

Author and psychologist Steve Biddulph established the Siev X Memorial Project to recognise the 353 asylum seekers who drowned in international waters between Indonesia and Australia in October 2001.

In 2004 and 2005 schools across Australia were invited to design a memorial to the Siev X. More than 200 entries will be on show.

The exhibition will coincide with the 4th anniversary of the sinking of the Siev X. The exhibition will be open between 10am and 4pm until Saturday 22 October.

What: Opening of exhibition of designs for the Siev X National Memorial Project
When: Wednesday 19 October 2005, at 6:30 pm.
Where: Canberra City Uniting Church, 69 Northbourne Ave

I’ve been to the cyclone Tracy memorial, it was quite appropriate and nice. It was also in Darwin. 🙂

Perhaps the comrade has been reading or been informed of public opinion via the RiotACT opinions on the matter and decided to pull the plug before it got too serious.

I still think a ceremonial sinking of a boat in LBG would be pretty cool though.

Nohope making another attempt to piss Howard off and had to pull his head in? Say, where did that statue of Johnny ever end up?

Oh and that is one of the most poorly worded articles ever. Bad ABC, no biscuit for you.
