First blood has been drawn in the MTB World Championships, and I’m not talking about the 4X competitor who broke his arm having a gentle practice run on Monday! Today Italy scored the first rainbow jerseys for the event in the Team Relay. This event is a tag team cross country race with a teams consisting of one rider from each of the following classifications: elite men, elite women, under 23 men, and junior men (yes, I think under 23 women should get a chance for this race). Unfortunately the Aussies finished back in 14th (4 mins, 32 seconds behind the Italians). Australian under 23 team member and Canberra lad, Michael Baker put in a solid effort for the Aussies scoring 6th in his classification – let’s hope he has somthing left in the tank for later in the week.

On MTB Worlds Canberra there is a full race report.
Canberra local Russ Baker has a great selection of photos from today.

Meanwhile, the downhill riders have been practicing on the mountain. It seems lighter bikes with less travel are being employed this year to take the sting out of the flatter section of the course at the finish.
Check out the DH action (including videos) on Dirt Magazine UK.

Finally, in deepest darkest suburban Canberra, final touches were being put to the track and the first practice sessions were being run for the Pump Track World Champs.Dont forget that you can also win a double pass to the finals this weekend simply by becoming a RiotACT premium member

[Ed – RiotPost] And I’m throwing in an interview with Defending men’s world champion Christoph Sauser (Switzerland) by Canadian Cyclist.

There’s no jump over the shed. Most riders will keep their wheels pretty close to the ground when riding to maximise speed.

I heard that there was a call over the loudspeaker today for the paramedics to attend the “Rock Garden”.

Now is it just me, or does a feature called the Rock Garden inspire a non soft landing in mountain biking. Same with the stupid ski runs called Rock Garden as well I guess.

Pop down for a squizz at the Rock Garden. When the riders are into it you don’t want to watch but you can’t look away.

I feel vicarious fear for each and every rider that tries to go through it the ‘quick’ (read airborne) way

Deckard you may just be right on that one.

Judging by the noise I’m guessing that the pump track was somewhere in northern Kambah this evening.

Is it just me or does that look like a jump onto or over the shed ? 🙂

Re photo 2: yes, it may well be.

Going to have to get me one of those pump tracks.
