ACT Fire & Rescue will patrol a small mulch fire burning at Oaks Estate overnight.

Firefighters were alerted to the 30 metre x 30 metre fire on Station Street at 4:20pm.

ACT Fire & Rescue and ACT Rural Fire Service crews managed to contain the fire using one pumper, two compressed air foam (CAFS) units and three tankers despite the presence of strong winds.

One fire crew will remain on scene overnight with the current gusty conditions not expected to ease until midnight.

There are no properties nearby the fire but Oaks Estate residents may see and smell smoke tonight and again tomorrow.

Earthmoving equipment will be used in the morning to break up the mulch pile to allow the fire to be fully extinguished.

Hey wow… there was an earlier mulch fire in Oaks Estate in 2011: http://the-riotact.com/oaks-estate-mulch-fire/53298

Also in winter.

I would have thought Summer would be the danger period.
