Murray Cod and Golden Perch to be pumped into the lakes

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope has announced the completion of the Fish Stocking Plan for the Australian Capital Territory 2009-2014.

The upshot of which is that we’re going to get more baby fish pushed into the lakes in the hopes that our rapacious anglers will give the native fishies in the streams and rivers a break:

Approximately 50,000 fingerlings will be introduced to ACT waterways this year with over 2.2 million having been added since 1981.

The ACT Government focuses on stocking native species such as Murray Cod and Golden Perch, which adapt well to our local lakes.

“These species survive well and help to create a more balanced ecosystem in the artificial environments of our lakes and ponds,” Mr Stanhope said.

The monitoring of Canberra urban lakes takes place each year to check the success of fish stocking activities. Maintaining healthy fish populations in our urban lakes provide great fishing opportunities for recreational fishers while also helping to reduce the pressure on native fish in our non-urban rivers and streams.

The final plan will, one day, appear on the DECCEW website.

UPDATED: The plan has appeared on the TAMS website.

Why dont we have more “Carp Out” competitions..to my knowledge there is usually only 2 per year.if more if these were to take place, not only would we reduce the carp population but also the redfin as a by catch!!MAYBE a few fish bins please Mr Stand’n’Hope!

Most of the fish released get gobbed by redfin and cormorants in short order. Stuff that comes from rivers is generally edible, anything from the lakes would make a dog sick. If you wouldn’t drink the water don’t eat anything that comes from it. Anyone up for a cup of Gininderra Green Tea?

They would be better off dumping in some artificial structure for the natives to hide in.

Carp aren’t bad as a sport fish on light gear, killing them doesn’t make a bit of difference though.

Redfin can be caught practically anywhere on lure, try the green stumpjumper (#27 Green Tiger) or RMG poltergeist in R5 ‘Firefin’ or R24 ‘Deep Purple’ Just wander the banks flicking lures until you hit a patch of them.

Be interesting to see how this goes… as an occasional angler I always throw back the natives, but kill the European Carp. Horrible fish the carp. Haven’t caught anything but carp in Burley Griffin, although some people apparently have caught red fin?
