The NZ Herald is taking an interest in the welfare of fake 14 year old Kiwi “Roxanne” and her smutty interlocutor Canberra’s Murray Colin Stubbs (45, former teacher).

In the end the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the charge of using the internet to procure sex. But he has been found guilty of using the internet in an offensive way, one suspects he is not alone in this.

Spare a thought for New Zealand’s police Detective Sergeant Steve Waugh who spent five months pretending to be a dirty talking 14 year old girl with a sad and lonely 45 year old man.

Strangely, this woman, who was recently sentenced, fell afoul of the same section of law as Mr Stubbs has…
(using the charges listed under a previous judgement in Mr Stubbs’ case her)

Jessica Chantelle Cook, 22, pleaded guilty in the Gympie Magistrates Court today to one count of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.
He said she used the internet “as a way of venting her frustrations.”
“She started trolling to get her point of view across but obviously it got out of control,” Mr Connolly said.

CRIMINAL CODE ACT 1995 Section 474.17
Using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence
(1) A person is guilty of an offence if:
(a) the person uses a carriage service; and
(b) the person does so in a way (whether by the method of use or the content of a communication, or both) that reasonable persons would regard as being, in all the circumstances, menacing, harassing or offensive.

So be careful what you say online, children…

I’m looking at you Captain RAAF,

“guilty of using the internet in an offensive way” Hmmmn, most RiotAct posters would be caught in that net…

Detective Sergeant Steve Waugh?

If they have the time and resources to go after one misguided man, could they please look into these offensive Viagra spam mails? My crown jewel is no one’s business except my partner’s and I (I first, then my partner, obviously).

These cases always run a fine line between community safety and entrapment of ‘sad and lonely 45 year old [men]’.
