Christ on a bike! What chances have local bands got with attitudes like this? Yet again Canberra proves to be a bunch of f’n art-snobs.

Kudos to johnboy for supporting them and the local scene, and boo to those who have taken the opportunity to practice their bitching.

On the strength of that clip I’ll be going to see them as soon as I can – and hip hop isn’t even my “thing”.

Dry your eyes, princess. There’s a difference between bitching and objective assessment.

If you like the video and enjoy the music, that’s great. But don’t get bent out of shape because others’ views don’t accord with your own.

This one song/video isn’t my glass of tea; I’m not writing off the group or their repetoire (sp?).

I actually listened to these guys new CD a couple of weeks back and I was impressed.
One of them has a sexy husky voice…

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Having read this thread throughout the day with no access to the vision of the clip, I was ready to have a righteously indignant bitch at the nay-sayers, but having just watched the first third of the clip, I have to say I’m slightly underwhelmed.

I’m getting resonances of Year 10 media studies and making five minute films with Super 8 cameras. Not saying that a) I could do better, or b) way less meritorious stuff doesn’t make its way on to rage — too many negatives — there is worse stuff on rage, is what I’m saying. But I’m not about to rush out to see them or buy merch based on the clip.

In my limited experience, there is a lot of Canberra talent that’s had to move to Sydney, Melbourne and OS to make good. And many I know have done good. But you’re always going to have little fish who end up floating belly-up in bigger ponds — Charles Darwin had something to say on topic. Don’t know about “refugee camp for failed Canberra musicians” though.

While I wish we could keep more of our local artists Canberra can be a small pond and the urge to move to Melbourne where there are new audiences plus opportunities for more paid work makes a lot of sense.

Everything you are saying is coming from some sort of magical fantasy land that bears no actual resemblance to Canberra or the arts scene in which we are a part of. I love it!

It’s like all the bands back in America who move out to LA to gain exposure only to spend less time playing music, and more time working in restaurants and snorting coke.

Fitzroy is like a refugee camp for failed Canberra musicians. They should open up a Kingsleys down there.

Sorry, but the clip’s pretty mediocre – of course friends of CP aren’t going to give a useful critique. Do them a favour and tell them the truth: it’s pretty dull. Not having a budget is no excuse. The camera work is downright poor.

The great Canberra cliche – move to Melbourne and become stars!

I think some bands should focus more time working on their music and less time worrying about their image and popularity.

This is still great comedy!

I used to be a bit fond of the Chicken Okkult and BOCK.

I don’t think BOCK reached their full potential.

(they already have)

But I think we’ve always held on to artists that make the great exodus for at least a few months while they resettle in Melbourne. I will not rant.

I like the new clip. I’ve only heard one of the Casual Projects tunes before (the one with the clip where they are all dirt farmers) and to my ear this new one had tighter chops and more inventive rhyming. Good on youse.

I wonder how long it will be befo they relocate to Melbourne?

And the missing words were: Maybe see you (whoever) there.

I should add that, in my opinion, there are some pretty good bands going around. We gigged with Marji Curran and Adam Hole not long ago and they were awesome! And Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens are pretty cool as well.

On topic (well, your topic), Marhi and Adam are at Filthy’s ‘Musical Madness’ tomorrow (Tuesday 2 Dec) night, and I’ve not had the pleasure (despite hearing rave reviews).

Glad to see you’re still hammering away at it in the face of all that, Thumper. Got your demo this morning — looking forward to having a listen.

And if you’re still looking for a rock opera tenor…. * bats eyelids *

how can anyone not like a film clip that is so reminiscent of the classic “Backstreets Back”?

canberrajazz.net/

And there’s a Jazz at the Folkus Room page but I just can’t bring the details up at the moment. Any web search should get you there.

I like all kinds of music. But let’s focus on what Canberra has to offer.

Unfortunately this town has been pillaged over the past decade in regards to music with a drop in the amount of quality venues for artists.

And there is not a single decent record store. Not one. That’s poor.

Still no mention of actual bands! I love it!

mike nock is from canberra too. he’s pretty special.

There’s plenty of good jazz in Canberra – with the school of music jazz school pumping out stacks of top-grade jazz players, if you can’t find it, then you’ve got some major problems.

I saw Wayne Krantz play a few weeks ago, outstanding. I wanted to check out Chick Corea, Vinnie Colaiuta, John Schofield, etc. at the Opera House, but it’s too damn expensive.

You’d just prefer to sit at a keyboard and bitch, we’ve seen that already.

Seems like an odd criticism on a website that’s heavily devoted to the continual bitching about the most insignificant aspects of life in Canberra.

That 1000 post thread about bag searches was very enlightening.

Anyhoo. Yeah, I dug the clip. The music isn’t my cup of tea, but the spirit of the whole thing is great.

I went to the Aeon of Horus CD launch last night – great gig, the crowd wouldn’t let the band get off stage. Definitely one of the finer metal bands of the Berra.

Anyway… enough of this troll.

Kudos to the Cas P lads… they’re putting in the hard yards and it’s fantastic to see them getting some rewards for their efforts.

Power on boys.

Nah, Eyeball’s reminiscing for the good old days when they were young.

There are more venues now than a few years ago, more ways to buy and sell music, but the dinosaur wails that things are different.

Sounds like one of them whiney emos to me.

Back on topic , I thought it was a pretty decent song/beat and clip.

And I don’t even like that sort of music (he says while listening to a mix of Coldplay and Dido)…

Local guys? More power to ’em.

Eyeball… there’s no need for canberra to have a great record store.

Heard of the internet perhaps?

There’s lots of records for sale on the internet.

Who needs human interaction when we’ve got the internet, right?

Who needs local gigs when you’ve got youtube?

Eyeball….

Yeah the lack of venues sucks ass, but so what…

It’s been that way before and will more than certainly be that way again.

Whatever… if bands want to play badly enough they will find a way.

I disagree Thumper… I think bands slog their guts out because they love to play, not because there is somewhere for them to do it.

Having somewhere to do it just makes it a little easy.

Eyeball… there’s no need for canberra to have a great record store.

Heard of the internet perhaps?

There’s lots of records for sale on the internet.

So you don’t like Canberra music and don’t think it’s of high quality?

Personally I can’t see Casual Projects or any other band in the city losing sleep because that’s what you think.

If you don’t think the music is very good then do better…

Put up or shut up.

Nice try at stirring the pot, but at the end of the day….

Fail.

Now go away.

Or just kill yourself and end the pain for everyone.

well at least your’e not saying its complete rubbish. fair to middling? nothing wrong with that assesment of canberra music. Two factors for this being acceptable are

1) the size of the place juxtaposed against other music hotspots around the country

2) I believe canberra’s average income is a little higher than elsewhere which indicates that we have less people doing it tough in terms of lower to middle class); therefore not as much inspiration/desperation to write music.

If you were saying it’s rubbish then i would suggest you look up the word subjective.

However all things said and done I think being average is completely adequate for canberra.

Your generalisations make me weep even harder!

What bands are you referring too?

Maybe we live in a different Canberra! But your frantic, unfocused generic rambling bears no resemblance to the diverse bands that I watch several nights a week.

I don’t know what will shut you up, because you at no point have mentioned any examples of what you like and what you don’t like!

In fact your comments seem entirely focused towards getting a response.

I HATE CANBERRA MUSIC, COME AND ARGUE WITH ME. LOOK HOW CONTROVERSIAL I AM. I AM IN NO WAY LIKE EVERY OTHER BORING TROLL ON THE INTERNET.

Thumbs up!

Alchemist, Pod People, Aeon of Horus.

What’s not to love?

Eyeball In A Quart Jar Of Snot3:45 pm 01 Dec 08

Just a demon in disguise.

Rabid old crow…

Are you CrazyChester in disguise?

Eyeball In A Quart Jar Of Snot3:39 pm 01 Dec 08

Cute.

Hadley, you are correct in your description of the Canberra music scene as being ‘depressing’ and ‘generic’.

My main concern with Canberra artists is that they’re just…. mediocre.

Generally they’re not so bad that I want to hurl vomit at them, but neither do I want to part with $5 to hear them play.

Canberra is a littered with a hundred odd cookie cutter groups of all sorts that you wil find in every town. They’re just not interesting. It’s like Pervian pan pipe bands.

Now, I’m sure hordes of Canberra musicians are going to flock here to put me down and try to inform me about how vibrant the music scene is and blah blah blah……

Frankly, I’m not moved. Smoke some pcp, find some inspiration, and create something that will shut up this rabid old crow.

It makes me sad that Eyeball will not share the plethora of wonderful music it has collected, to help us drag ourselves out of the depressing and generic murk of the Canberra music scene!

VERY. VERY. SAD. THESE ARE MY TEARS. WATCH HOW I WEEP THEM.

Eyeball, how about you make your criticism more constructive, or share with us you positive experiences?

We don’t have to put up with your incessant negativity.

Wrapped in a giant turd.

I don’t know which ‘high profile’ Canberra band I find more nauseating – Casual Projects or Dahahoo.

I remember about 6 months ago, a friend of mine who works with the Casual Projects lads at the Department dragged me along to ANU to watch them perform. I’ve never been too big on hip-hop, but those guys blew me away (as did the very attractive female dancers they attracted to the show!).

Seriously, if you get a chance to see them live, do it. They don’t phone in the phunk. It’s hand delivered

Well, I’m glad you enjoy something!

*grin*

Eyeball In A Quart Jar Of Snot11:51 am 01 Dec 08

Too much to be concentrated into a blog post and scrutinised by those who disagree with my assessment of Casual Projects.

However, I do collect a lot of music from the many remote assholes of the planet.

Well what do you like?

Eyeball In A Quart Jar Of Snot11:34 am 01 Dec 08

I love music.

That’s why I find The Casual Projects to be one of the worst musical acts I’ve had the displeasure of hearing. And that’s a pretty strong statement considering how horribly mediocre Canberra bands tend to be.

What music do you like Eyeball? Do you like music?

Eyeball In A Quart Jar Of Snot11:23 am 01 Dec 08

If this is the finest Canberra has to offer then Canberra musicians should meet my friend Zyklon B.

Excellent!

Cool song and cool clip.

Awesome clip…Awesome Awesome… man these guys gonna be popular just got to get it up on video hits, rage type thing….damn….congratulations… good editing and all

Feel free to request it on TripleJ. 🙂

Got my attention. I think I’ll be viewing it again and again.
