Did anyone else have a fax machine (or some other device) ring them at apx 0115 and 0430 Sunday morning on the 18th of February? A friend had a similar series of myserious calls at this time as well.

Just interested to know if anyone had similar experiences. Quite annoying if you ask me.

eh not tele – another source -I just switched to decaf – gimmie a break 😛

found This in the tele today – maybe its related – maybe its not.

Seems pretty plausible – does explain the fax like noises – but does not explain the call back function we experienced.

If I didn’t need it for broadband, and the fact that my parents are of the ye olde days and get freaked by the idea of making an “expensive” call to a mobile, I would ditch the landline.

The only people who ever call are telemarketers and me/my flatmates’ interstate parents. Thus it has been dubbed “the old people phone”.

Probably just the local manifestation of this scam.

The silence at Chateau Swaggie was broken, according to the wife, at 4:50 because she opened her eyes briefly before kicking me out of bed to answer the damn thing.

i have an unlisted no. and yet received a call from a lovely indian chap, who was calling sequential no.s from a sheet of paper, one after the other until some buggins answers. i asked him to erase my no. from their records, but i guess a computer can call a no. one at a time and send it a fax if it hits jackpot. if not…? well, what do they care?

now that is a practice someone ought to write a letter about and have stopped…

Sometimes it’s easiest just to plug in a fax and see what rolls off. It may be a business trying fax info between offices. A return fax saying “wrong number, morons!” can solve the problem.

Perhaps our glorious telco’s could offer a service where our phone lines are disabled for nominated periods of the night. As previously noted, we all have mobiles anyway.

The Lord doth move in mysterious ways.

A group house I used to live in (in Aranda) inherited the fax number of a Travel Agency that had just closed in Jamison (1995). For our 1st two weeks we had auto fax calls every morning starting at about 430am – with faxes set to redial if not successful (apparently quite common with travel agencies).

Needless to say our number chnaged quick-smart… although the possible widespread nature of this event would indicate this is not the case here. Whilst Auto-dialers are illegal in Oz – they probably are not in some less-savoury, tele-marketing haunts O.S.

If it wasn’t for broadband I would never have a landline. never have it on the hook as only everybody uses mobiles

It’s ET phoning home.

Could be the 419 scam.
I once was working night shift in an area with a lot of phones with sequential numbers (one attached to a fax) and they all rang in turn(giving the fax squeal when answered), starting from lowest number. What rolled off the fax was the 419 scam letter. (incidentally all the numbers were unlisted and never released to the public).

YES!! – thought it was just us as none of our friends had that problem

We had that as well.
I was not sure what to make of it – but we got ours at about 0430 Sunday ,morning.
We got one – hung up – got another hung up – then left phone off hook.

Not unusual for us to get phone calls that early (thanks to the shift coordinator @ Mrs Danmans work) – but due to the fax – we went “offline”
