"MyWay hacking" misinterpretation

Hey all,

We’ve had a think about our last blog post and taken a fresh look on how it could be mis-interpreted.

We didn’t intend to give the impression that we were maliciously going after the security of the MyWay system. Nothing of the sort, this was an exploration of what MyWay is and how it works: nothing was hacked or similar, nor are we encouraging it. On that note, the title “MyWay Card Hacking” was a reference to technical exploration, not the criminal connotation of the term.

We’d be really keen to see ACTION/MyWay adopt the positive possibilites of incorporating MyWay into phones with NFC.

It would make more sense to expand myway to parking.

Super handy, that would be.

Sadly, “cracking” and “hacking” are synonymous in most people’s minds – thanks to lazy and ignorant journalism (and I use the term loosely).

3 – Someone using off the shelf components manages to combine them into something useful like a home made alarm system or a remote control appliance that you can’t buy in stores. “Honey, come look at this. I pulled apart that new sowing machine I got you for xmas and built an automatic lawn mower that fixes holes in socks. .. Why are you looking at me like that?”

That should be ‘sewing’ machine. not ‘sowing’ machine.

Get thee to a piggery!

Also, go along to the Canberra Hackerpsace http://www.makehackvoid.com/ and check out some pretty cool hacks.

For the non-geek out there the work ‘hack’ is easily enough misunderstood as the 30 year old virgin sitting in his mother’s basement and breaking into computer systems. This is actually considered ‘cracking’.

Hacking (To hack, A hack,) is a broader term covering creativity, ingenuity:

Examples:
1 – Someone writing a program to do a job comes up with a very elegant was of making the program work. “Wow, the way you encapsulated those methods in their own class was awesome”
2 – Someone writing a program who manages to make two very different things work together through a mish-mash of creativity and brute force. “The default java class for capturing the voltage from the flux capacitor was pretty hopeless, so I got all MacGyver on it and put together my own function for narrowing the margin of error to 5 microns of tolerance”

This has happened more than is talked about.

And yeah, most chuds see the word hack and immediately think evil interweb trollz

Oh?

I was curious to see how secure the cards were. If I could possibly top my card up without having actually paid, or get the details of someone else’s card, it would defeat the purpose of a $65 million dollar system

Congrats on the MyBus app and you awards (genuinely).. but if this is how you plan to promote yourself and the professional image of your company (linked to from original article), I wouldn’t be holding your breath for any future Government grants or commercial support.

If you genuinely want NFC support / Google Wallet integration for MyWay, pick up the phone and talk to them… or instatweet or facespace them.. or whatever the hip method is this week.

Anyone else puzzled why a busnetwork that costs 100Million a year and has a revenue of 10 Million a year needs a 70Million dollar ticketing system thats likely going to be outdated in 10 years?

It doesnt make sense to have Myway even using NFI.. Just scrap it and make PT free!

Surely the Green overlord would agree?
