Narrabundah Tyre Slasher

I read in earlier posts of the activities of the South Side or Narrabundah Tyre Slasher. Well he/she or it has struck 4 times in the last two weeks. First two tyres in MacKinlay St, two tyres opposite that house next week, then another two last Saturday 13 March next door to the first house and another two tyres on the last car the very next night.

These cars were parked either on the drive strip between road and footpath or the third car on the nature strip. From reading the history in earlier posts it would seem that this misguided avenger has a thing about cars on nature strips or not properly parked inside property lines.Cars parked in adjoining houses but inside property lines were not touched.

The replacement cost of these 8 tyres was about $1000, a big cost for two pensioners and a student. I can appreciate that it would be almost impossible for police to catch the offender due to the time of night and the intermittent nature of the crimes.

Apparently flats in McMillan Cr near Canberra Ave have been targetted frequently due to the “overflow” parking there.

Any ideas on apprehending this nasty offender?

..and just thought I would add, I did call the police on the last 3 occations.. they told me there was nothing they could do unless they had enough information reports which then they could increase patrol. They suggested I went and bought a secruity camera system.

Putting my Criminal Minds hat on:

* You’re looking for a white male offender between the ages of 35-55.
* Lives between Martina St and McKinlay St.
* Probably walks a dog after hours to ‘police’ the neighbourhood and take note of offenders.
* Has a serious ‘vigilante’ complex bordering on sociopathic.
* Likely a member of a wilderness society or other heritage preservation society.

Can you fill tyres with a poisonous gas or acid so that if they are punctured the perpatrator cops it?

Just thought I add here that although it has finally stopped for now, over a period of 4 weeks last month I had my tyres stabbed/slashed 7 times!!

the first 3 or 4 was when my car was parked on the street outside my house, the others were when my car was parked up against the front garden (my tyre was actually in the garden once!). It was always my back tyre but changed sides. I live in Keira St.

Its an aboslute joke!! I dont understand how someone could do it.. It’s not even something remotely funny!

Puncturing would be a better description than slashing. In my case, the side walls were stabbed with a pointed implement, perhaps a sharpened screw driver or icepick type tool. This would make you wary of trying to stop the perpetrator knowing he/she has some sort of stabbing implement and a strange avenging outlook on life. The only evidence on my tyres were small marks on sidewall with a few threads showing hanging out. I understand this was the case over the other side of street too.

Make that five times. Four tyres on the one vehicle that was parked on the verge that one night (28 March). Estimate $250 per tyre plus the stuff around to get the vehicle to the tyre dealership. If this has been going on for some time, has anyone approached the local council or police? If so, would love to know the result/feedback. As for the whole personal justice issue, it would be a very satisfying five minutes but most likely end up with you having only your word against theirs for the tyres but with them pointing their (hopefully bandaged) finger at your blunt instrument… followed by the inevitable prosecution & criminal record….

Im not sure where youre buying your tyres from, but youre getting ripped off. The most expensive tyres Ive ever bought, were for my ute and were $130 because it needs ‘light truck’ rated tyres. Prior to that I dont think Ive ever paid more than $100 per tyre, mind you Ive only stuck to the usual brands like Goodyear, Bridgestone, Dunlop, etc.

And presumably the cheapest, hardest, poorest performing, bargain basement range of tyres that these brands produce/import by the sounds of things.

$200+ per corner for stock rims on a larger car isn’t unreasonable for something that actually, y’know, provides some level of traction when it rains or under hard braking – for that 1.5+ tonne of steel that you’re solely responsible for controlling.

Yep, me too, I phoned around for a set of four Bridgestones (Turanzas I think they were)for my VT Commodore about four years ago – cheapest cost was around $250 each. I bought them because they were good quality tyres and the only things between me and the possibility of aquaplaning etc and if you’ve had that happen to you at 110km/h on the Hume Boringway (which I did before I bought them) then you’ll know what it’s like to have to change your underpants. They proved to be a very good buy, as an ex-motorcyclist I don’t scrimp on tyres.

Anyway, what I’d like to know is how did the slasher do it? What sort of slashing implement would you use to slash a tyre? They are plenty tough things, is ‘slash’ meant to say puncture? I can imagine someone sticking a sharp knife or pointed tool into a tyre, but slashing?

Regarding apprehension of the anti-social prat, I can think of several ways to put a healthy high voltage electric charge on a car overnight – next day just look for a pile of charred flesh, or someone walking around with their hair standing on end.

Good luck in apprehending the idiot.

Agreed el. I’d be lucky to get away with much change from $2000 for a set of four new tyres.

I am fascinated by this thread but one thing that confuses me is that it is perfectly legal to park on the street unless a sign advises otherwise! So what is the problem? Canberrans have this thing for not parking on the street so when it does happen people freak out. I legitimately parked on a street the other week (Jim Pike Ave) and some moron in a ute came up behind me and held his hand on the horn until I moved!? I mean WTF? It seems the nanny state has struck again.

Why did you move if you knew you weren’t in the wrong?

Granted, I shouldn’t have moved but I was dropping someone off so it wasn’t an issue to move on. I was tempted to deliberately get out of the car and lock it up and walk away but the fact that the tool in the ute had his hand on the horn it would just be aggravating the situation…

I think you will find that you could legally park along most of the length of Northbourne as there are no signs suggesting otherwise. Only where there are specific No Parking signs and Bus Zone signs obviously. And besides a three-lane road, it is not as if the road is busy (compared to roads like King Georges Road in Sydney which is the same width and allows cars to park on the curb lane and is probably 5 times as busy).

But it seems that going by the posts it must be a Canberra thing… don’t park on the street!

That’s an massive underestimate. It might cost that much if you wanted cheap small tires. Try $180-250 each for something half decent or for large/sporty cars.

So you say you’ve never had to buy tyres for a large and/or sporty car.

My girlfriend and I live in a comfortable four bedroom house in Tuggeranong, and I can still manage to ride to work. Our combined income isn’t as high as yours perhaps, but then on your $150k pa executive salary you’ve already bought into the typical imported Canberran mindset. Go back to Sydney and take your elitism with you.

This person needs some dental work.

Yeah, I had my car windows smashed in Kambah once when I was parked on the street. The people I was staying with said “Oh yeah, don’t park on the street, the neighbours get upset”.
Another example of some Canberrans’ bizarre feelings of ownership over the public roads.

I hope you get the bastard. My friends and I have had our cars vandalised around Canberra and it sucks.

And we can all enjoy the dark, grainy photo of some jerkoff wearing a hooded jumper. Great.

Sounds like the Greens new car reduction program. Soon to be rolled out to all Suburbs.

Not all of use can live in the Inner North or South, in a over crowded share house and bike to Acton to work or go to Uni.

You should be able to smell the the Tyre slasher doing it. I jump to this conclusion because cars inside the property line are untouched.

Like I said in another thread – Hide in teh bushes and introduce the offender to Mr Louisville Slugger when caught.

Mr Slasher meets Mr Basher.

Piratemonkey12:07 pm 21 Mar 10

Get together with neighbours park a couple of cars where they are likely to get damaged. Changes the cars every other night and finally operate on a rotating roster of someone watching the cars all night all the time. Surely you will eventually see the basta$d.

Then wake everyone and, well im sure you can think up a fun way to deal with the problem.

I’ve had two different workmates of mine who have unfortunately experienced the work of the tyre slasher last year (happened to one girl TWICE). The thing is, when they did move their cars into their designated driveways, it didn’t happen again, thus also bringing them to assumption that it was some sort of angry avenger administering vigilante justice. One of them joked to me that “well..whatever they wanted, it worked because i’ve not parked out on the side of the road since!”

You know what’d be really cool? For the residents of Narrabundah to ALL park their cars on the side of the road outside property lines:) It’d be their way to all unite and fight back and send a strong message out to say “Hey you Tyre Slasher, you will not be bully us!”

Then again, this might backfire somewhat…

Never mind.
