The ABC brings word that the ACT Branch of the National Trust is concerned about our heritage and has released a list of grievances (not that they’ve put it on their website).

Of concern, according to the ABC, are:

    — Yarralumla Brickworks,
    — Other historic sites somewhere in the Molonglo Valley,
    — Lake Burley Griffin, if the Immigration Bridge ever gets up,
    — The Dickson and Lyneham flats, and
    — The Botanic Gardens.

Maybe they are bored because the city has no real history and only expanded after 1960, about when Architecture and Art both hit there lowest points in Human history.

Buildings since then look like they have been designed by engineers with no Architectural input.

And Art looks like its been drawn by toddlers on drugs.

Believe it or not, the Dickson and Lyneham flats are supposed to be fairly good examples of mid-twentieth century architecture. I don’t hold much hope for their preservation though.

Cheap construction and aesthetically depressing. Mid 20th Century architecture sure did suck.

Judging by some of the buildings going up around Canberra (particularly in Gungahlin), early 21st century architecture can be pretty awful too.

I’ve said it before, and I’m still of the opinion that there are particular eras in architecture that we’d be better not to remember, and that the middle of last century is one of them. They should be relegated to textbooks for warning architecture students about their capacity to kill our souls!

This was brought up nearly exactly a year ago http://the-riotact.com/?p=7897

I really don’t see how those disgusting Lyhnam and Dickson flats keep getting included. They should have been torn down years ago.

This looks like the NT ACT annual report on what they believe is under threat. There’s few surprises (the brickworks and Dickson and Lyneham Flats have been perennial starters) and I guess that the lake and botanical gardens are topical.
