If you see smoke and flame bellowing out of Canberra’s existing Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum (down by Scrivener Dam, off Lady Denman Drive) tomorrow don’t fret.

The National Capital Authority is warning that they’re doing a burnoff tomorrow:

Debris and woody weeds that have been cleared from the site will be burned as part of the plan to restore the original plantings of the arboretum.

NCA Executive Director of National Capital Estate, Alison Walker-Kaye said Canberrans should be aware of the burning.

“The hazard reduction burn will cause some smoke in the area and public access to parts of the arboretum will be restricted”.

Apparently the NCA is working on a general upgrade of the existing tree plantings.

UPDATE: The ESA are also doing a burn on Stromlo:

8:50pm Friday 23 July 2010 – Small hazard reduction burn tomorrow at Stromlo The ACT Rural Fire Service Rivers Brigade will conduct a small hazard reduction burn tomorrow Saturday 24 July, 2010 near Barrenjoey Drive, Stromlo, weather permitting.

The burn will be conducted to remove accumulated fuel, six individual piles of combustible material covering a total area of approximately 120 x 120 metres in size from 11am. Three tankers and 12 personnel will conduct the burn.

The ACT Handy Map grid reference for the burn is K12. The ACT Handy Map can be found on the inside back cover of the 2010 Yellow Pages phone directory or by clicking on the ACT Handy Map image on the bushfires home page of this website.

Don’t burn waste in your yard, have a “cooking and heating” fire, and fuel it with debris and woody weeds.

they can’t take it to the dump because they filled it up with tuggeranong.

Right, so if I burn off debris and woody weeds in my yard I’m polluting the neighbourhood and triggering off everyone’s respiratory complaints. But if the NCA do it its OK because its ‘hazard reduction’. Why can’t they take it to the dump like everyone else.
