A man is lucky to be alive after calling an ambulance to his Braddon property last night.

The 33 year old rang emergency triple zero (000) just after 9 o’clock when he started experiencing an asthma attack.

When the ACT Ambulance Service crew arrived at Dooring Street property they had trouble gaining access to the apartment complex because of security measures in place at the building.

The intensive care paramedics had to get the attention of other occupants to let them inside.

When they arrived at the man’s apartment, the patient collapsed and lost consciousness before he could open the door so the crew were forced to break it down to start treating him.

They managed to bring the man back then rushed him to Calvary Hospital in a critical condition where he is now recovering.

Don’t fire and rescue have master building and elevator keys for all buildings like this? Wouldn’t it be prudent to also supply the same keys to the ambos?

The firies definitely do – its shaped like an axe.

But think about it a bit – just how many building would it involve? Even limiting it to complexes with 10 or more units, there would be a few hundred keys. Give one set to each fire engine and ambulance and you suddenly have a key management nightmare – better hope none get lost.

In fact there is an apartment building in the Kingston Foreshore who is currently advertising just how secure their apartments are and pitching it towards aging empty nesters. That’s not going to end well.

Isn’t this expected at any apartment block? You can’t get in or up the elevator because your not a resident of the building.
