you will quickly filter them out dependant on your budget. canberra is so expensive to build. please dont tell me you bought a block without first getting a build cost. upwards of 500k for the build onlyfor a four bedda in gungahlin, add the 400k land and it closing in on a million. plenty of better buys of existing places around canberra for a million.

Me and the Mrs bought a block in Crace and wanted a 2 storey house that was custom designed for our needs. My advice is to avoid budget builders and remember that the cheapest quote isn’t always the best. We figured that if you build a unique house, it is worth more in the long run than one that looks like everyone else’s house. Mayfair Homes designed and built our house, for the price they originally quoted – which is always a bonus. And we love our new house! They have a straight forward approach, and they listened. Give them a try … http://www.mayfairhomes.com.au

MrsMarple, we also bought a block in Crace and though we were limited in our selection of builders we could use (the old Crace 5 builders rule) we chose the cheapest..I wish we had’nt..One of the better builders came in with a quote $15k above ours and every neighbour we have met is delighted with the end product from the company..We endured delays, cracked this, leaking that..the list has now just been resolved 1 year after we were handed the keys.

Hi Spykler. Just interested in who you built with and who your neighbours built with? Which ones of the Crace panel did you think were the better builders. We have just bought a block in Crace so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Another vote here for Master Homes.

We’re currently building and my builder, whilst polite isn’t all the best at organising his trades. It’s taken his brickies 5 weeks to do 2 houses (good weather the whole time) so now my place is stuck with all this bad weather and around 4 weeks behind.
When I ask about extras and what it’s going to cost me, I can’t get anything out of him.

Now to make matters worse, he’s taken a week off to go jetsetting….

We used Kolak Homes in Crace. This was our second home, so we had already been through a build before. The second time around seemed a lot easier…. we had to buy a cheep and cheerful project home the first time, so we treated ourselves on the second home ! Job was done well, we had a great experience, would recommend to anyone.

Metro = too big too quick and the rumour 2 weeks ago was that the ATO were about to send them to the wall – I would say that is why there website is down – another one bites the dust as they say.

We are currently in the process of building with Total Living, we should start in a couple of weeks – so far we are very happy with them, the wife is very happy with the inclusions which = happy life for me 🙂

We built in Gungahlin 20 years ago, and then extended 15 years ago. We didn’t limit ourselves to just the builders based in the area. An interested builder will come to you, no matter where in Canberra you are. We used Paul and Craig Owen for our extension. They were both brilliant, based in Kambah, and at our place on time, or early to all meetings, and ran a very tight site. Our original builder was great, too, but long since retired, I would imagine.

Mitchell is part of Gunghalin, but, please, don’t fall into the Canberra habit of not looking at who is across the other side of the Barton or Federal Highways.

If Di Iulio Constructions are still around I would strongly recommend them. Three brothers and they were really lovely to work with – always polite, friendly and helpful. We have lived in the house they built us in Nicholls for almost ten years now and we are still very happy with it.

thanks guys! has anyone heard anything about gold rubyhomes? or metro constructions? Metro constructions website is down 🙁

We also built with Renaissance, and are very happy with them. Of course they had their issues here and there, but were nothing compared to some of the stories we heard from neighbours about other builders. They were very accomodating with us putting through lots of variations and generally hassling them far too often (the project manager was always run off his feet with at least 30 houses in progress at any time, but he was always fantastic when dealing with us, extremely professional and personable). I suspect that Renaissance are the only decent builders around.

There are lots of builders with offices in Mitchell. A good strategy is to go to one of the display villages on the weekend (eg. Bonner, or Springbank Rise in Casey) – most of the builders are represented there.

ill have a look at them, and i see mitchell is close, im new :/

Clearly, if you’re qubbling over the closeness of Mitchell to Gungahlin, haha.

Also, as noted, Canberra is small enough that most builders will come to you, regardless of location.

Good luck with your search. At the moment I think all builders are a bunch of c@#ts, so I hope you have better luck than me.

Forget about where the builder is located. They will come to you.

I’ve used Master Homes a couple of times now and found them to be very good, excellent work quality.

Steve at inspired is great. Very professional and great eye for detail.

We built with Renaissance as well and were very very happy with them – there latest display home is in Crace in the display village there. They really are quality

Mitchell is Gungahlin area.

have you heard anything about any in gungahlin? im looking at a few here at the moment though i know nothing about them yet

We built with Renaissance (Mitchell). They were excellent, and two years on there are no problems with the house. Timeframes were pretty much met, budget was met, service was great and build quality is tops. Happy customers.
