Needing cash for breakdown. Where to get quick money?

Hi, I have just received the bad news that my 7 year old car is almost dead, it needs major work now. My problem is having just moved to Canberra and paying so much money to relocate, rental bond etc I have no money left, but I really need my car.

I am trying to find someone to loan me the money needed $1300. Is there a Pawnbroker or Loan Office in Canberra?

The yellow pages does not have a listing for any, although I recall one in Lonsdale St Braddon from years ago but they are no longer there.

Does anyone know if any pawnbrokers or loan offices exist here still or are they a thing of the past in Canberra? I only need the money for about 6weeks or so till I get back on my feet. Thanks

Thanks all, in a lot better position than first thought, going to take advantage of the low interest rates and support the ‘new car’ industry. Thanks for ideas

That’s a lovely comment Masq, and thank you for making the point with such sensitivity. It was a delightful way to start the day.
Good luck Con – I hope you can see the light at the end of the tunnel soon.

Do you have a loan on your property that you’re ahead on? Couldn’t you withdraw some funds from there?

Thanks for the suggestions! Yes the car has always had regular services, it has just under 300,000klm, it has clutch problems, it is 7 years old after all. Thanks but I don’t need any counselling. I do not have a credit card and by the time I apply and receive one I would be out of this situation, I only need this money for no longer than 6weeks more like 2-3weeks fingers crossed, but I really need it by Friday. There was a pawnbroker/loan office in Braddon years ago that were very helpful in times of need, can our banks lend people small amounts of money under $1000 NOW. I am one of those ‘lucky’ people that have no one else to ask in tuff times (my fault). I have property for sale interstate property which I hope sells quickly after I buy new car maybe, but that does not help me this week, and yes ‘porn’ would be more fun than ‘pawn’!

Good luck! You have a great attitude, especially in not biting back at mean posts.
If you already have a job which means you need the car, you could do a second job (cleaning?) for a few weeks. If you go down the pawnbroker or shonky loans path, you will be paying a horrendous interest rate, and you may need a second job to pay it off.

Concamkel try City Loan Office (pawnbroker) on Canberra Ave next to near United Fuel. It is the fella that was in Lonsdale St Braddon years ago, forgot his name but really nice guy! Small office now and no retail, and only loans on gold and jewellery and big things. I have used him a couple of times, (like you I have no help in tuff times!) always good service, better if you actually pickup the goods. Did you use them in Braddon? If you have the goods to ‘pawn’ he should be able to help you, if he can’t help no one will! Good luck with it.

Only 7 years old and almost dead? Sounds like a pretty crap car. What’s wrong with it and what is it?

Hyundai or Kia????

Most Hyundai and Kia are more reliable than Aussie or Euro vehicles these days.

300,000 kms in 7 years?! How many laps of Australia have you done? My ’94 car has done 331,000 kms. Clutch is fine, just everything else is buggered. And regular servicing sadly won’t save you, or even pick up major problems (like worn wheel bearings and hub assemblies so stuffed the wheel’s almost falling off).

It’s not that rare to see high km on cars. My car is not even 4 years old and has done 170,000km. Pretty much expected when you do 150-160km a day.

Maybe it’s a taxi

I’m a full-time student with a small income and almost nothing in assets, but the bank was still willing to give me a $5,000 loan (which I didn’t end up taking).
If I’m eligible, you probably are too.
The minimum loan they’ll give is $5000 though. And apparently there are fines if you pay it back within a year.

Do you have an account with a bank or a credit union? If you have an ongoing relationship with a financial institution, it’s a bit more likely you can get a personal loan off them.

http://nimble.com.au/ – $600 in your account under an hour

You could possibly get a same day loan from your bank (at least one of the big 4 offers it) for $5k, you spend $1.5k on your wheels and then plow the remaining $3.5k back into the loan with no penalty.

I was in a similar position once, and that’s how I got it sorted. Good luck

I seem to recall there being a “pay day loans” type place on either Crawford or Monaro Streets in Queanbeyan. Cash converters in Woden might help you as well.

Be very careful what you do though, the terms on those sorts of loans are usually pretty horrendous.

Yeah, don’t ever go to the pay day loan places. They’re basically legal loan sharks.

I don’t have any suggestions though sorry.

+1, what sort of car? Have you serviced it properly?

Try Care Financial Counselling service they have a no interest loans scheme for low and moderate income earners (http://www.carefcs.org/)

Or, Salvation Army (http://salvos.org.au/need-help/financial-troubles) provide emergency financial assistance, you will need to supply evidence of your need to both organisations though.

In my view, much safer options than high interest pay day lenders.

Huge thumbs up to Care Financial Counselling. They also have a No Interest Loans Scheme to look into.

If you’re on any kind of centrelink payment (including and especially family tax benefit) you can get advances on future payments, which are effectively interest free loans where the principle is paid back over 6 months.

I’d be going the credit card option. You can get a second one and do a 0% balance transfer as well if you need a bot more time.

Any reason you’re leaning toward this option and not a credit card? Even if you have to swallow an annual fee it would likely be cheaper overall, especially if you miscalculate your time-frame for repayment. I’d think that the banks would be pretty keen to push lines of credit with consumer spending down and saving up, so you should be able to find a good deal if you shop around.

Maybe for quick money you need to consider porn rather than pawn.
